What Is a Yogakaraka Planet
> A yogakaraka planet simultaneously rules one kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) and one trikona house (1st, 5th, or 9th) for a specific lagna. This dual lordship makes it the single most beneficial planet in the horoscope, capable of delivering wealth, status, and life advancement regardless of its natural character as a malefic or benefic planet.
In classical Vedic astrology, houses are classified by their function. Kendra houses — the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th — are called pillars of the chart. They represent self, home, partnership, and career. Trikona houses — the 1st, 5th, and 9th — are called houses of dharma and fortune. The 1st house counts as both a kendra and a trikona simultaneously.
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), the foundational text of Vedic astrology compiled by Maharishi Parashara, establishes that when a single planet rules both a kendra and a trikona for a given lagna, that planet becomes a raja yoga producer in its own right. Parashara calls such a planet yogakaraka — the maker of yoga (auspicious combination).
The critical insight here is that natural beneficence or maleficence becomes secondary. Jupiter is a natural benefic, but it does not become yogakaraka for every lagna. Saturn is a natural malefic, but it becomes yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra lagnas. The determining factor is house lordship, not inherent planetary nature.
Visit /birth-chart-calculator to generate your Vedic birth chart and identify your lagna before reading the lagna-specific list below.
The Rule of Kendra and Trikona Lordship
> For yogakaraka status, a planet must own one house from the kendra group (1, 4, 7, 10) and one house from the trikona group (1, 5, 9). The 1st house belongs to both groups, so the ascendant lord carries partial trikona quality already. Full yogakaraka status requires owning a second house from the other group.
Each planet rules two signs and therefore two houses in any given horoscope. For yogakaraka status, one of those houses must be a kendra and the other must be a trikona. The combination creates a planet that simultaneously grounds material stability (kendra) with fortune and dharma (trikona).
According to Phaladeepika by Mantreswara, planets that own both a kendra and a trikona give results far superior to planets that own only one type of house. A planet owning two kendras becomes a mere functional indicator without the dharmic thrust. A planet owning two trikonas becomes a giver of fortune without the material platform to express it. Only the kendra-trikona combination produces sustained, visible worldly results.
The strength of the yogakaraka depends on several factors in the actual birth chart. A yogakaraka placed in its own sign, exaltation sign, or a friendly sign delivers full results. A yogakaraka placed in debilitation or an enemy sign delivers diminished results, though still better than a non-yogakaraka planet in the same position.
Yogakaraka for Each of the 12 Lagnas
> Each lagna has a specific yogakaraka planet determined by the natural order of zodiac signs and planetary rulerships. For five lagnas — Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces, and Aquarius — no single planet achieves true yogakaraka status because no planet rules both types of houses for those lagnas.
Here is the complete list of yogakaraka planets for each lagna, derived from BPHS and confirmed by B.V. Raman in "Three Hundred Important Combinations":
Aries Lagna: Saturn is not yogakaraka. The Sun rules the 5th (trikona) and is a natural luminary, but owns only the 5th. Mars rules the 1st and 8th — the 8th is not a trikona. Technically, Aries lagna has no single-planet yogakaraka. However, B.V. Raman notes that Saturn as 10th and 11th lord, combined with its 11th lordship (labha), gains functional strength here, though it does not qualify as a true yogakaraka.
Taurus Lagna: Saturn rules the 9th (trikona) and the 10th (kendra). This makes Saturn the unambiguous yogakaraka for Taurus lagna. Saturn's natural malefic character becomes irrelevant — it delivers career advancement, dharmic fortune, and sustained material gains for Taurus ascendants.
Gemini Lagna: No single yogakaraka. Venus rules the 5th and 12th; the 12th is not a kendra. Saturn rules the 8th and 9th; the 8th is not a kendra.
Cancer Lagna: Mars rules the 5th (trikona) and the 10th (kendra). Mars is the yogakaraka for Cancer lagna. Despite being a natural malefic, Mars gives career success, authority, and dharmic fulfillment for Cancer ascendants when well-placed.
Leo Lagna: Mars rules the 4th (kendra) and the 9th (trikona). Mars is the yogakaraka for Leo lagna. B.V. Raman specifically highlights this combination in "A Manual of Hindu Astrology" as one of the clearest examples of malefic-turned-benefic through house lordship.
Virgo Lagna: No single yogakaraka. Venus rules the 2nd and 9th; the 2nd is not a kendra. Saturn rules the 5th and 6th; the 6th is not a kendra.
Libra Lagna: Saturn rules the 4th (kendra) and the 5th (trikona). Saturn is the yogakaraka for Libra lagna. This is the second lagna after Taurus where Saturn achieves yogakaraka status, explaining why Libra ascendants often gain significantly during Saturn periods.
Scorpio Lagna: No single yogakaraka in the traditional sense. The Moon rules the 9th — a trikona — but owns only one house. Jupiter rules the 2nd and 5th; 2nd is not a kendra. Some classical texts give modified yogakaraka status to the Moon for Scorpio due to its 9th lordship combined with its natural lordship qualities.
Sagittarius Lagna: No single yogakaraka. The Sun rules the 9th only. Mars rules the 5th and 12th.
Capricorn Lagna: Venus rules the 5th (trikona) and the 10th (kendra). Venus is the yogakaraka for Capricorn lagna. Venus delivers career excellence, artistic success, and fortunate dharmic circumstances for Capricorn ascendants.
Aquarius Lagna: Venus rules the 4th (kendra) and the 9th (trikona). Venus is the yogakaraka for Aquarius lagna as well — the second consecutive lagna where Venus holds this status.
Pisces Lagna: No single yogakaraka. Mars rules the 2nd and 9th; 2nd is not a kendra. Saturn rules the 11th and 12th; neither is a kendra-trikona combination.
How to Identify the Yogakaraka in Your Own Chart
> Open your birth chart and check your lagna (ascendant sign). Match it to the list above. If your lagna has a yogakaraka planet, locate that planet in your chart by house and sign. Its house placement shows which life area receives the greatest benefic push, and its sign placement shows whether its full strength is accessible.
The identification process involves three steps. First, confirm your lagna from your birth chart. If you have not yet generated your chart, use /kundli to create a complete Vedic birth chart with all planetary positions.
Second, find the yogakaraka planet from the list above. If your lagna has no yogakaraka (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces, Aquarius), identify the temporary functional benefics — planets owning only kendras or only trikonas — and work with combined planetary periods instead.
Third, assess the strength of the yogakaraka in your chart. A yogakaraka in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 10th house gives strong results. A yogakaraka in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house delays results but does not eliminate them entirely. A yogakaraka in exaltation or own sign operates at maximum capacity.
What a Strong Yogakaraka Delivers
> A strong yogakaraka placed in a kendra or trikona, in exaltation or own sign, with no affliction from malefics, delivers sustained career advancement, material wealth, recognition from authority, and protection during its dasha period. The results begin at the start of its mahadasha and intensify during favorable antardashas.
During the mahadasha (major period) of the yogakaraka, the native experiences the most significant positive events of their life in terms of career, finances, and status. B.V. Raman documents numerous case studies in "Notable Horoscopes" where the yogakaraka dasha period coincides with marriage, professional elevation, financial windfalls, or public recognition.
The quality of the yogakaraka dasha depends on the natal placement. For a Taurus lagna native, if Saturn sits in Libra (its own sign) in the 6th house, the yogakaraka is strong by sign but placed in a dusthana house. The dasha brings professional results but with challenges related to 6th-house themes — competition, health, or debt simultaneously.
A yogakaraka aspected by malefics, particularly Rahu or Ketu, or placed in conjunction with a functional malefic for the lagna, shows mixed or delayed results. The yoga is not cancelled, but the delivery timeline extends and the path involves more obstacles.
Yogakaraka in Different Houses
> The yogakaraka's house placement in the birth chart directs its energy toward that house's life domain. A yogakaraka in the 10th house focuses its power on career and public reputation. In the 7th house, it elevates marriage and business partnerships. In the 5th house, it benefits children, intelligence, and creative pursuits.
Yogakaraka in 1st house: The native carries natural leadership, physical vitality, and magnetic personality. Career advancement comes through personal initiative and self-expression.
Yogakaraka in 4th house: Excellent real estate, vehicles, maternal happiness, and domestic stability. Academic success in early life.
Yogakaraka in 5th house: Bright intelligence, fortunate children, speculative gains, and strong connection to dharmic practices. Past-life merit becomes accessible.
Yogakaraka in 7th house: The spouse brings significant fortune and status. Business partnerships prove highly productive. Marriage timing coincides with yogakaraka dasha.
Yogakaraka in 9th house: Exceptional fortune through dharma, travel, father's blessings, and higher learning. The native benefits from spiritual or philosophical pursuits that simultaneously advance material life.
Yogakaraka in 10th house: Peak career success, public recognition, authority positions, and professional prestige. This is considered the best placement for visible worldly achievement.
Yogakaraka in 2nd house: Accumulated wealth, strong family heritage, and good speech. Financial gains come steadily and compound over time.
Yogakaraka in Dusthana (6th, 8th, 12th): Even in these houses, the yogakaraka protects the native from the worst outcomes of that house. The yoga operates, but through a narrower channel — 8th house yogakaraka often delivers sudden gains through inheritance or transformation rather than conventional career success.
Exaltation and Debilitation of the Yogakaraka
> When the yogakaraka is exalted, it functions at 100% of its potential — the native experiences the full range of its positive significations. When debilitated, its results require cancellation of debilitation (neecha bhanga) to fully manifest. An exalted yogakaraka in an angular house produces one of the most powerful natal configurations in Vedic astrology.
For Taurus lagna, Saturn exalts in Libra (6th house from Taurus). Though in the 6th house, an exalted Saturn still delivers significant yogakaraka results — professional competition that the native wins, service industry success, or victory over enemies.
For Cancer and Leo lagna, Mars exalts in Capricorn. If Mars occupies Capricorn in the chart of a Cancer lagna native, it sits in the 7th house in exaltation. This delivers an exceptionally elevated spouse and powerful business partnerships alongside its yogakaraka results.
For Capricorn and Aquarius lagna, Venus exalts in Pisces. An exalted Venus in Pisces for Capricorn lagna sits in the 3rd house — elevating communications, siblings, and skill-based career pursuits. For Aquarius lagna, exalted Venus in Pisces sits in the 2nd house, delivering accumulated wealth and high family status.
