A conjunction in astrology — when two or more planets occupy the same position (or nearly the same position) in the zodiac — is widely considered the most powerful of all planetary aspects. Where other aspects like squares, trines, sextiles, and oppositions describe planets at specific angular distances that either harmonize or clash, a conjunction describes planets so close together that their energies literally fuse into a single compound force. This fusion changes both planets fundamentally. A Moon conjunct Venus is not the Moon plus Venus operating separately — it is a new blended energy that carries characteristics of both and produces results that neither would produce alone.

Understanding conjunctions is essential for accurate chart reading because so much of a birth chart's character depends on them. A person with Sun conjunct Mercury has a fundamentally different intellectual experience than someone with Sun and Mercury in separate houses. Someone with Venus conjunct Jupiter experiences love and abundance in unified ways, while Venus and Jupiter in different houses express these themes separately. Missing the conjunctions in a chart means missing some of the most defining features of the native's personality, relationships, career, and spiritual path.

But not all conjunctions are beneficial. Some planet combinations blend beautifully — like Venus conjunct Jupiter (the "great benefic meeting") or Sun conjunct Jupiter (the "royal combination"). Others blend in ways that produce significant challenges — like Saturn conjunct Mars (restrictive anger), Sun conjunct Saturn (father-authority conflict), or Venus conjunct Ketu (romantic detachment). The art of reading conjunctions lies in understanding which planets enhance each other, which diminish each other, which burn each other (combustion by Sun), and which create novel third-energy results impossible to predict by either planet alone.

This guide explains everything you need to know about conjunctions in astrology — what conjunction means in both Western and Vedic traditions, the orb rules that determine when planets are officially "conjunct," the energetic mechanics of how planets blend in conjunction, the major types of planetary conjunctions with their typical effects, the special case of combustion (when Sun conjuncts another planet), how house placement modifies conjunction effects, and how to interpret conjunctions in your own birth chart.

A conjunction in astrology occurs when two or more planets occupy the same position — or nearly the same position — on the zodiac wheel. The planets are said to be "conjunct" (adjective) or "in conjunction" (noun phrase) when this alignment occurs.

The Basic Definition

Planets are conjunct when they:

  • Occupy the same zodiac sign.
  • Are within a specific angular distance of each other (called the "orb").
  • Combine their energies into a single compound force.

Why Conjunctions Are the Most Powerful Aspect

Conjunctions are considered the most powerful planetary aspect because:

  • The planets fuse — their energies don't just interact from a distance but actually blend into one combined force.
  • Results are amplified — both planets' strengths (or weaknesses) are intensified by the union.
  • The whole becomes more than the sum — a new third energy emerges that neither planet would produce alone.
  • Effects are continuous — unlike aspects that require exact alignment to activate, conjunctions remain active as long as the planets remain in the same sign.
  • Personality manifestation is direct — the conjunction's effects appear directly in the native's life rather than through indirect correlations.

How Western and Vedic Traditions Differ

Both Western and Vedic astrology recognize conjunctions, but with some differences:

  • Western astrology often uses tighter orbs (typically 8-10 degrees) and considers the exact degree separation important.
  • Vedic astrology generally considers planets in the same sign as conjunct regardless of exact degree, though close degree proximity intensifies effects. Vedic also pays special attention to combustion (when planets are within 10-15 degrees of the Sun).

What Are the Orb Rules for Planetary Conjunctions?

The "orb" is the allowed angular distance between two planets for them to be considered conjunct.

Western Astrology Orbs

Typical Western orbs for conjunctions:

  • Sun and Moon: 8-10 degrees
  • Other major planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn): 6-8 degrees
  • Minor points and asteroids: 3-5 degrees

Tighter orbs produce more intense effects; wider orbs produce more diluted effects.

Vedic Astrology Orbs

Vedic astrology generally treats any two planets in the same sign as having some degree of conjunction effect, with the intensity increasing as the degree proximity tightens:

  • Exact degree (0-1 degree apart): Maximum fusion, single combined energy.
  • Close conjunction (1-5 degrees apart): Very strong blending.
  • Moderate conjunction (5-10 degrees apart): Clear blending but less fused.
  • Loose conjunction (same sign, 10+ degrees apart): Noticeable influence but distinct energies.
  • Different signs (even if close in degree): Not considered conjunction in Vedic tradition; may be considered a different aspect.

Combustion Orbs

When any planet is within a specific distance from the Sun, it is considered combust (burnt by the Sun). Classical Vedic combustion orbs:

  • Moon: 12 degrees
  • Mars: 17 degrees
  • Mercury: 14 degrees (direct), 12 degrees (retrograde)
  • Jupiter: 11 degrees
  • Venus: 10 degrees (direct), 8 degrees (retrograde)
  • Saturn: 15 degrees

Combust planets lose much of their natural strength and function differently than non-combust conjunctions with the Sun.

How Do Planets Blend in Conjunction?

Different planet combinations blend in distinctly different ways:

Harmonious Blends (Benefic + Benefic)

  • Venus conjunct Jupiter: The two great benefics combined — extraordinary luck in love, wealth, and good fortune. Often called the most favorable conjunction.
  • Jupiter conjunct Mercury: Wisdom combined with intellect — exceptional teaching and writing ability.
  • Moon conjunct Venus: Emotional sensitivity combined with love — deep romantic capacity.
  • Sun conjunct Jupiter: Leadership combined with wisdom — the "royal yoga" producing noble character.

Complementary Blends (Compatible but Distinct)

  • Sun conjunct Mercury: Identity combined with intellect — strong communicator but watch for Mercury combustion if too close.
  • Moon conjunct Jupiter: Emotion combined with wisdom — philosophical and faithful personality (gaja-kesari-yoga if in angular houses).
  • Mars conjunct Jupiter: Action combined with wisdom — ethical warriors and leaders.
  • Mars conjunct Venus: Passion combined with love — intense romantic and sexual energy.

Challenging Blends (Contrary Natures)

  • Saturn conjunct Mars: Restriction combined with action — frustration, anger, delayed ambitions.
  • Sun conjunct Saturn: Ego combined with authority restriction — father conflicts, slow recognition.
  • Venus conjunct Saturn: Love combined with restriction — emotional coldness, delayed romance.
  • Mercury conjunct Rahu: Intelligence combined with obsession — deceptive tendencies if afflicted.

Shadow Blends (Involving Rahu or Ketu)

  • Sun conjunct Rahu/Ketu: Eclipse-like effect on identity; father-related karma.
  • Moon conjunct Rahu/Ketu: Emotional and psychic disturbance; Grahan dosha if afflicted.
  • Jupiter conjunct Rahu: Guru Chandal yoga — spiritual-material conflict.
  • Venus conjunct Ketu: Romantic detachment or unusual love patterns.

Combustion Blends (Any Planet Conjunct Sun Too Close)

When any planet is within combustion range of the Sun, the planet's natural strength is significantly reduced regardless of the conjunction's other qualities. Combust planets often produce delayed or distorted results in the areas they rule.

What Are the Major Planetary Conjunctions and Their Effects?

Sun Conjunct Moon (New Moon Conjunction)

Born on or near a new moon. Strong unity of conscious identity and emotional nature — what you feel and what you are match directly. Personality is integrated but lacks the tension that drives self-reflection. Often produces direct, uncomplicated natives.

Sun Conjunct Mercury

Strong communication and intellectual identity. Mind and identity aligned. Watch for combustion (within 14 degrees) which can weaken Mercury's clarity. Far from Sun produces normal communicator; close to Sun within combustion produces speech or thinking difficulties.

Sun Conjunct Venus

Integrates identity with love and beauty. Charming, artistic, romantically expressive. Watch for Venus combustion (within 10 degrees) which can produce relationship difficulties despite outer charm.

Sun Conjunct Mars

Intensifies ambition, courage, and assertiveness. Strong leadership, athletic capability. Can produce aggressive tendencies. Watch for Mars combustion which reduces courage.

Sun Conjunct Jupiter

The "royal yoga" — combines leadership with wisdom. Noble character, natural authority, good fortune. Generally highly favorable. Risk of ego-inflation if Jupiter is afflicted.

Sun Conjunct Saturn

Conflict between ego and karmic restriction. Father issues, delayed recognition, structural life challenges. Produces eventual mature authority through early difficulties.

Sun Conjunct Rahu/Ketu

Eclipse-like effect. Sun's natural power is disrupted by Rahu's obsession or Ketu's dissolution. Father-related karma, identity challenges, spiritual crises. Intense but transformative.

Moon Conjunct Mercury

Emotional intelligence combined with analytical mind. Articulate about feelings, good at counseling and writing about emotional themes.

Moon Conjunct Venus

One of the most favorable conjunctions for relationships and beauty. Gentle, artistic, loving nature. Strong magnetism to partners. Watch for excessive indulgence.

Moon Conjunct Mars

Emotional intensity combined with action. Passionate, protective, sometimes volatile. Produces courageous but emotionally reactive nature.

Moon Conjunct Jupiter

Gaja-Kesari-Yoga if in angular houses. Moon + Jupiter produces wisdom, good fortune, beneficial relationships with mother figures. Strong life-long luck.

Moon Conjunct Saturn

Emotional restriction and heaviness. Mother-related difficulties, chronic melancholy, emotional maturity through difficulty. Strong endurance over time.

Moon Conjunct Rahu/Ketu

Grahan Dosha (eclipse affliction) — emotional disturbance, anxiety, psychic openness that can destabilize. Significant inner work needed.

Mercury Conjunct Venus

Intellectual charm and aesthetic communication. Excellent for writing, art, music with intellectual depth, pleasing speech.

Mercury Conjunct Mars

Sharp tongue, argumentative intelligence, debate skill. Risk of verbal aggression.

Mercury Conjunct Jupiter

Wisdom combined with articulate communication. Exceptional teaching, writing, advisory ability.

Mercury Conjunct Saturn

Methodical thinking, depth over speed. Writers, researchers, analysts. Slow but accurate intellect.

Venus Conjunct Mars

Passionate romantic and sexual energy. Strong physical attraction, artistic expression of desire.

Venus Conjunct Jupiter

The great benefic combination. Luck in love, wealth, pleasure. One of the most favorable conjunctions.

Venus Conjunct Saturn

Delayed or difficult romance, older spouse, serious love, eventual deep commitment after trials.

Mars Conjunct Jupiter

Ethical warrior, righteous action, leadership with wisdom. Favorable for military, sports, law.

Mars Conjunct Saturn

Frustration, restricted action, anger management issues. Chronic obstacles requiring persistence.

Jupiter Conjunct Saturn

Wisdom combined with restriction — philosophical maturity, delayed fortune, late-life wisdom.

Jupiter Conjunct Rahu

Guru Chandal yoga — spiritual-material conflict, distorted beliefs, sometimes unusual teachers or religious experiences.

Saturn Conjunct Rahu

Intense karmic testing, long-term obstacles, eventual transformation through suffering.

What Is Combustion and How Does It Differ From Normal Conjunction?

Combustion is a special case of conjunction where a planet is too close to the Sun. The planet is said to be "combust" or "asta" (burnt) in Vedic astrology.

The Orbs of Combustion

As listed earlier:

  • Moon: 12°
  • Mars: 17°
  • Mercury: 14° direct, 12° retrograde
  • Jupiter: 11°
  • Venus: 10° direct, 8° retrograde
  • Saturn: 15°

Effects of Combustion

Combust planets lose much of their natural strength:

  • They operate through Sun's filter rather than their own nature.
  • Their natural significations are weakened or distorted.
  • They produce delayed or confused results in the areas they rule.
  • They can still be powerful but in non-obvious ways.

The Exception: Cazimi

When a planet is within 17 minutes of arc (just over a quarter of a degree) from the exact Sun position, it is called "cazimi" — paradoxically the most powerful position, not the weakest. The planet is said to be "in the heart of the Sun" and fused with the Sun's soul-essence rather than burned by its rays. Cazimi produces extraordinarily powerful effects in a compressed, intense form.

How to Interpret Combustion

  • Very close to Sun (within 1-5 degrees) → deep combustion, significant weakening.
  • Moderate distance (5-10 degrees) → combust but with some independent function.
  • Wider combustion (10+ degrees but still within orb) → mild combustion, mostly normal function.
  • Beyond combustion orb → normal conjunction without combustion effect.

How Does House Placement Modify Conjunction Effects?

The house where a conjunction occurs significantly modifies its expression:

Conjunctions in Kendras (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th)

Angular houses amplify conjunction effects strongly. Kendra conjunctions produce direct, visible life themes related to those houses.

Conjunctions in Trikonas (1st, 5th, 9th)

Trine houses support positive expression of conjunctions. Trikona conjunctions are generally favorable regardless of planets involved.

Conjunctions in Upachayas (3rd, 6th, 11th)

Growth houses allow conjunctions to produce increasing positive results over time through effort and consciousness.

Conjunctions in Dusthanas (6th, 8th, 12th)

Difficult houses can complicate conjunctions but can also produce Vipreet Raj Yoga (where difficulty produces unexpected blessing). Nuanced interpretation required.
