The Nine Grahas of Vedic Astrology
> Vedic astrology works with nine planets called Grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Each graha rules one or two zodiac signs, has an exaltation and debilitation sign, and governs specific domains of human life. Their positions in the birth chart determine life themes and outcomes.
The word "graha" means "to grasp or seize" — each planet grasps specific energies and life domains and channels them into the birth chart. The nine grahas include the two luminaries (Sun and Moon), five visible planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn), and two shadow planets (Rahu and Ketu — the lunar nodes).
Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies — they are mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. Despite being invisible, they are treated as full planets in Vedic astrology because their effects on human life are concrete and observable.
You can see all nine planets' placements in your chart at /birth-chart-calculator.
The Sun — Surya
> The Sun is the soul of the chart. It governs the core identity, father, authority, government, vitality, and one's dharmic purpose. A strong Sun gives leadership, confidence, and recognition; a weak or afflicted Sun produces ego conflicts, poor relationships with authority figures, and health issues related to the heart.
Nature: Natural malefic (mild) Signs ruled: Leo Exaltation: Aries (highest exaltation at 10° Aries) Debilitation: Libra (deepest debilitation at 10° Libra) Moolatrikona: Leo (0°–20°) Friendly planets: Moon, Mars, Jupiter Enemy planets: Saturn, Venus Neutral planets: Mercury
What the Sun governs: 1. Soul, core identity, self-expression 2. Father, authority figures, government 3. Physical vitality, right eye, heart 4. Leadership, career in administration or politics 5. Sunday, the eastern direction, gold, ruby
Sun in strength vs. weakness: Sun exalted in Aries or in Leo (own sign) produces natural leaders, politically connected individuals, and those who command respect. Sun debilitated in Libra produces identity uncertainty, troubled father relationships, and difficulty asserting the self in social contexts.
The Moon — Chandra
> The Moon governs the mind, emotions, mother, and instinctual reactions. It is the fastest-moving graha, changing signs every 2.5 days. A strong Moon gives emotional intelligence, mental stability, and nurturing ability; a weak Moon produces anxiety, emotional vulnerability, and difficulty with the maternal relationship.
Nature: Natural benefic Signs ruled: Cancer Exaltation: Taurus (highest exaltation at 3° Taurus) Debilitation: Scorpio (deepest debilitation at 3° Scorpio) Moolatrikona: Taurus (4°–30°) Friendly planets: Sun, Mercury Enemy planets: None (though Saturn is considered unfriendly in some traditions) Neutral planets: Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn
What the Moon governs: 1. Mind, emotions, memory, imagination 2. Mother, nurturing, domestic security 3. Water, fluids, fertility 4. Left eye, chest, breasts, lungs 5. Monday, the northwest direction, pearls, silver
The Moon's waxing/waning status matters: A waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha, moving toward full moon) is stronger than a waning Moon (Krishna Paksha, moving toward new moon). A full Moon is the strongest; a new Moon-conjunct Sun is considered weak.
Mars — Mangal (Kuja)
> Mars is the planet of energy, courage, action, and conflict. It governs the military, athletes, surgeons, and engineers. A strong Mars gives decisiveness, physical strength, and the ability to overcome obstacles; an afflicted Mars produces aggression, accidents, injuries, and property disputes.
Nature: Natural malefic Signs ruled: Aries and Scorpio Exaltation: Capricorn (highest exaltation at 28° Capricorn) Debilitation: Cancer (deepest debilitation at 28° Cancer) Moolatrikona: Aries (0°–12°) Friendly planets: Sun, Moon, Jupiter Enemy planets: Mercury, Saturn Neutral planets: Venus
What Mars governs: 1. Energy, courage, assertion, aggression 2. Brothers, soldiers, police, surgeons, athletes 3. Land, property, real estate 4. Blood, muscles, bone marrow, head injuries 5. Tuesday, the south direction, red coral, fire element
Mars special aspects: Mars aspects the 4th, 7th, and 8th houses from its position — making it one of the most powerful aspecting planets. Its 8th-house aspect is particularly notable for creating transformation or disruption in that domain.
Mercury — Budha
> Mercury governs intelligence, communication, commerce, analytical ability, and learning. It is the planet of the rational mind. A strong Mercury gives sharp intellect, eloquence, business acumen, and mathematical ability; a weak or afflicted Mercury produces communication difficulties, indecisiveness, and inconsistency.
Nature: Neutral (becomes benefic with benefics, malefic with malefics) Signs ruled: Gemini and Virgo Exaltation: Virgo (highest exaltation at 15° Virgo) Debilitation: Pisces (deepest debilitation at 15° Pisces) Moolatrikona: Virgo (16°–20°) Friendly planets: Sun, Venus Enemy planets: Moon Neutral planets: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn
What Mercury governs: 1. Intelligence, logic, analysis, language 2. Commerce, trade, accounting, mathematics 3. Siblings, neighbors, short-distance travel 4. Skin, nervous system, speech organs 5. Wednesday, the north direction, emerald, green
Mercury is the only planet whose exaltation and own sign are both in Virgo. It is considered the most intellectual planet. Mercury combust (close to the Sun) creates challenges in communication and rational thinking during that period.
Jupiter — Guru (Brihaspati)
> Jupiter is the great benefic of Vedic astrology. It governs wisdom, dharma, children, husband (in female charts), teachers, expansion, and spiritual growth. A well-placed Jupiter protects the chart and brings fortune; a weak or afflicted Jupiter reduces wisdom, gives weight gain issues, and disrupts the areas it governs.
Nature: Natural benefic (greatest benefic) Signs ruled: Sagittarius and Pisces Exaltation: Cancer (highest exaltation at 5° Cancer) Debilitation: Capricorn (deepest debilitation at 5° Capricorn) Moolatrikona: Sagittarius (0°–10°) Friendly planets: Sun, Moon, Mars Enemy planets: Mercury, Venus Neutral planets: Saturn
What Jupiter governs: 1. Wisdom, dharma, spirituality, religion 2. Children, fertility, husband (female charts) 3. Teachers, gurus, higher education, philosophy 4. Liver, fat tissue, thighs, hips 5. Thursday, the northeast direction, yellow sapphire, gold
Jupiter's special aspects: Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th, and 9th houses from its position. These three aspects are considered highly auspicious — Jupiter's gaze protects and expands whatever house it touches. Jupiter in the 1st house aspects the 5th, 7th, and 9th — an extremely favorable configuration.
Venus — Shukra
> Venus governs beauty, relationships, luxury, creativity, sensual pleasure, and marital happiness. It rules romance, artistic talent, and the enjoyment of life's pleasures. A strong Venus gives charm, aesthetic refinement, and fulfilling relationships; a weak Venus produces dissatisfaction in relationships and an inability to enjoy material comforts.
Nature: Natural benefic Signs ruled: Taurus and Libra Exaltation: Pisces (highest exaltation at 27° Pisces) Debilitation: Virgo (deepest debilitation at 27° Virgo) Moolatrikona: Libra (0°–15°) Friendly planets: Mercury, Saturn Enemy planets: Sun, Moon Neutral planets: Mars, Jupiter
What Venus governs: 1. Relationships, romance, marriage, sensuality 2. Arts, music, dance, beauty, luxury 3. Wife (male charts), vehicles, jewelry 4. Reproductive system, kidneys, cheeks 5. Friday, the southeast direction, diamond, white
Venus is the Daitya guru (teacher of the asuras) in Vedic mythology and carries a uniquely sensuous, artistic energy. Venus exalted in Pisces is the highest expression of devotional love and artistic refinement.
Saturn — Shani
> Saturn is the planet of karma, discipline, restriction, hard work, and delay. It governs the working class, elderly people, chronic conditions, and long-term results. A strong Saturn gives exceptional discipline, longevity, and the ability to build lasting structures; an afflicted Saturn produces chronic delays, depression, and karmic burdens.
Nature: Natural malefic Signs ruled: Capricorn and Aquarius Exaltation: Libra (highest exaltation at 20° Libra) Debilitation: Aries (deepest debilitation at 20° Aries) Moolatrikona: Aquarius (0°–20°) Friendly planets: Mercury, Venus Enemy planets: Sun, Moon, Mars Neutral planets: Jupiter
What Saturn governs: 1. Karma, discipline, hard work, perseverance 2. Old age, servants, laborers, masses 3. Chronic illness, bones, joints, teeth 4. Delays, restrictions, time, limitation 5. Saturday, the west direction, blue sapphire, iron
Saturn's special aspects: Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th, and 10th houses from its position. Saturn's 10th-house aspect (from the 1st house, Saturn aspects the 10th) disciplines the career domain. Saturn's 3rd-house aspect (from the 4th house, it aspects the 6th) increases competitive stamina.
Rahu — The North Lunar Node
> Rahu is the planet of obsession, worldly desire, illusion, and unconventional paths. It amplifies whatever it touches and drives the native toward the unfamiliar, the foreign, and the boundary-pushing. A well-placed Rahu gives worldly success through unconventional means; an afflicted Rahu produces delusion, addiction, and confusion about identity.
Nature: Natural malefic (shadow planet) Signs ruled: Aquarius (in some schools); no own sign in others Exaltation: Taurus (or Gemini, depending on the school) Debilitation: Scorpio (or Sagittarius) No Moolatrikona or own sign in all schools Friendly planets: Mercury, Venus, Saturn (behaves like Saturn) Enemy planets: Sun, Moon, Mars
What Rahu governs: 1. Foreign elements, technology, unconventional paths 2. Obsession, amplification, illusion 3. Paternal grandfather, outcasts, taboo subjects 4. Skin conditions, viral infections, sudden events 5. Smoky, dark, the southwest direction
Rahu functions like Saturn in many respects but adds an amplifying, obsessive quality. In the 10th house, Rahu gives extraordinary worldly ambition and often produces celebrities, politicians, and prominent public figures who rise through unconventional means.
Ketu — The South Lunar Node
> Ketu is the planet of past-life karma, spiritual liberation, and detachment. It governs what the native has mastered in previous lives and now seeks to release. A well-placed Ketu gives spiritual insight, occult ability, and liberation; an afflicted Ketu produces sudden losses, mysterious illnesses, and disconnection from the material world.
Nature: Natural malefic (shadow planet) Signs ruled: Scorpio (in some schools); no own sign in others Exaltation: Scorpio (or Sagittarius, depending on the school) Debilitation: Taurus (or Gemini) Friendly planets: Mars, Jupiter (behaves like Mars) Enemy planets: Venus, Mercury
What Ketu governs: 1. Past-life karma, spiritual liberation, occult 2. Maternal grandfather, spirituality, renunciation 3. Sudden events, losses, detachment 4. Wounds, surgeries, mysterious diseases 5. Spiritual, the south direction, cat's eye stone
Rahu and Ketu always oppose each other in the chart — they sit in opposite houses. Their axis in the chart represents the primary karmic direction: Rahu shows the soul's direction of growth (new experiences to pursue), while Ketu shows past-life mastery (areas of innate skill but diminishing returns).
Planetary Friendship and Enmity Table
Classical Vedic astrology defines natural planetary friendships and enmities as described in BPHS:
Planet | Friends | Neutral | Enemies
- Sun — Moon, Mars, Jupiter — Mercury — Saturn, Venus
- Moon — Sun, Mercury — Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — None
- Mars — Sun, Moon, Jupiter — Venus, Saturn — Mercury
- Mercury — Sun, Venus — Mars, Jupiter, Saturn — Moon
- Jupiter — Sun, Moon, Mars — Saturn — Mercury, Venus
- Venus — Mercury, Saturn — Mars, Jupiter — Sun, Moon
- Saturn — Mercury, Venus — Jupiter — Sun, Moon, Mars
These relationships determine how two planets behave when conjunct or aspecting each other, and also modify a planet's functional nature when it occupies a friendly, neutral, or enemy sign.
