> Vedic astrology works with nine planets called Grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Each graha rules one or two zodiac signs, has an exaltation and debilitation sign, and governs specific domains of human life. Their positions in the birth chart determine life themes and outcomes.

The word "graha" means "to grasp or seize" — each planet grasps specific energies and life domains and channels them into the birth chart. The nine grahas include the two luminaries (Sun and Moon), five visible planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn), and two shadow planets (Rahu and Ketu — the lunar nodes).

Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies — they are mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. Despite being invisible, they are treated as full planets in Vedic astrology because their effects on human life are concrete and observable.

Sun in strength vs. weakness: Sun exalted in Aries or in Leo (own sign) produces natural leaders, politically connected individuals, and those who command respect. Sun debilitated in Libra produces identity uncertainty, troubled father relationships, and difficulty asserting the self in social contexts.

The Moon's waxing/waning status matters: A waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha, moving toward full moon) is stronger than a waning Moon (Krishna Paksha, moving toward new moon). A full Moon is the strongest; a new Moon-conjunct Sun is considered weak.

Mars special aspects: Mars aspects the 4th, 7th, and 8th houses from its position — making it one of the most powerful aspecting planets. Its 8th-house aspect is particularly notable for creating transformation or disruption in that domain.

Mercury is the only planet whose exaltation and own sign are both in Virgo. It is considered the most intellectual planet. Mercury combust (close to the Sun) creates challenges in communication and rational thinking during that period.

> Jupiter is the great benefic of Vedic astrology. It governs wisdom, dharma, children, husband (in female charts), teachers, expansion, and spiritual growth. A well-placed Jupiter protects the chart and brings fortune; a weak or afflicted Jupiter reduces wisdom, gives weight gain issues, and disrupts the areas it governs.

Jupiter's special aspects: Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th, and 9th houses from its position. Jupiter in the 1st house aspects the 5th, 7th, and 9th — an extremely favorable configuration.

Venus is the Daitya guru (teacher of the asuras) in Vedic mythology and carries a uniquely sensuous, artistic energy. Venus exalted in Pisces is the highest expression of devotional love and artistic refinement.

> Saturn is the planet of karma, discipline, restriction, hard work, and delay. It governs the working class, elderly people, chronic conditions, and long-term results. Saturn's special aspects: Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th, and 10th houses from its position. Saturn's 10th-house aspect (from the 1st house, Saturn aspects the 10th) disciplines the career domain. Saturn's 3rd-house aspect (from the 4th house, it aspects the 6th) increases competitive stamina.

> Rahu is the planet of obsession, worldly desire, illusion, and unconventional paths. It amplifies whatever it touches and drives the native toward the unfamiliar, the foreign, and the boundary-pushing. A well-placed Rahu gives worldly success through unconventional means; an afflicted Rahu produces delusion, addiction, and confusion about identity.

Rahu functions like Saturn in many respects but adds an amplifying, obsessive quality. In the 10th house, Rahu gives extraordinary worldly ambition and often produces celebrities, politicians, and prominent public figures who rise through unconventional means.

Rahu and Ketu always oppose each other in the chart — they sit in opposite houses. Their axis in the chart represents the primary karmic direction: Rahu shows the soul's direction of growth (new experiences to pursue), while Ketu shows past-life mastery (areas of innate skill but diminishing returns).
