The Moon (Chandra) is the most personally significant planet in Vedic astrology — more than the Sun, the Moon shapes daily emotional experience, mental patterns, habitual responses, and the quality of the inner life. The Moon rules the mind (Manas), the mother, emotional security, public life, and the body's fluid systems. In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign is often considered more important than the Sun sign for understanding a person's lived experience — it is the lens through which all outer events are received, filtered, and felt. The Moon changes signs every 2–2.5 days, making its exact placement highly personal and time-sensitive.

Moon's Phases and Strength

The Moon's strength in Vedic astrology varies with its phase:

Strongest Moon: Full Moon (Purnima) — Moon is directly opposite the Sun, fully illuminated, and at maximum strength. A Full Moon natal Moon is considered particularly auspicious.

Weakest Moon: New Moon (Amavasya) — Moon is conjunct the Sun, invisible, and at minimum strength. Natal Moon within 72° of the Sun (in either direction) is considered moderately weakened; within 12° is significantly weakened.

Paksha Bala (Phase Strength):

  • Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight, days 1–15): Moon gains strength progressively
  • Krishna Paksha (waning fortnight, days 1–15): Moon loses strength progressively

Strong Moon vs. Weak Moon

Indicators of a strong Moon:

  • Moon in Cancer (own sign), Taurus (exaltation), or friendly signs
  • Waxing Moon — particularly Shukla Saptami (7th day) through Purnima (Full Moon)
  • Moon in a Kendra or Trikona house
  • Moon aspected by Jupiter (particularly powerful — creates Gaja Kesari if in Kendra)

Indicators of a weak/afflicted Moon:

  • Moon debilitated in Scorpio
  • New Moon (within 72° of the Sun)
  • Moon aspected by Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu (creates Chandra Grahan yoga)
  • Moon in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house without compensating factors

Weak Moon Manifestations

When the Moon is weak or afflicted:

  • Mental anxiety, emotional instability, mood swings, depression
  • Difficult relationship with the mother or maternal figures
  • Poor intuition or intuition overridden by anxiety
  • Sleep disturbances, particularly during waning Moon transits
  • Immune system vulnerabilities and fluid-related health issues
  • During the Moon Mahadasha: emotional turbulence, mother-related events, fluctuating circumstances

Moon Remedies

  • Mantra: Chandra Beej Mantra — Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandramasе Namah (108 times on Mondays)
  • Gemstone: Pearl (Moti) or Moonstone in silver on the ring finger of the right hand
  • Charity: Donate white food items (milk, rice, white cloth) on Mondays
  • Fasting: Monday fasting, particularly during Ekadashi and Purnima
  • Worship: Offer milk to a Shiva lingam on Mondays; observe Chandra Darshan (first sighting of new Moon)
  • Practice: Meditation under moonlight; Chandra Namaskar at night
