What Is a Combust Planet in Vedic Astrology

> Combustion happens when any planet comes too close to the Sun in the birth chart or during transit. The Sun's immense heat and light overwhelm the planet, reducing its ability to express its own significations. The planet is still present and still operates, but its voice is drowned out — much like a candle next to a bonfire.

The Sanskrit term for combustion is Moudyami (also written as Moudhya or Astangata), which refers to the state of a planet being "set" or hidden by the Sun. Just as stars become invisible during the day because the Sun's brightness overpowers them, planets close to the Sun are considered weakened in their ability to deliver independent results.

The Sun represents the soul, authority, and the self. When another planet comes within its combust zone, the Sun's identity and ego absorb that planet's energy, reducing the planet's ability to function as a separate, independent force. The planet's significations do not vanish — they get funneled through the Sun's framework, often in a way that is either overpowering or distorted.

Combustion is checked in the Rashi (D-1) chart using the longitudinal distance between the Sun and the planet in question. The closer the planet is to the exact degree of the Sun, the stronger the combustion effect. A planet within 1–2 degrees of the Sun is considered deeply combust and most affected.

Degree Limits for Combustion of Each Planet

> Each planet has a different combustion threshold because each planet orbits the Sun at a different distance and speed. Faster-moving, inner planets require closer proximity to the Sun before combustion kicks in. Slower, outer planets are affected at wider orbs. These thresholds are fixed classical standards, not approximations.

Planet | Combustion Orb (either side of Sun)

  • Moon (Chandra) — 12°
  • Mars (Mangal) — 17°
  • Mercury (Budha) — 14° (when direct), 12° (when retrograde)
  • Jupiter (Guru) — 11°
  • Venus (Shukra) — 10° (when direct), 8° (when retrograde)
  • Saturn (Shani) — 15°

Sun, Rahu, and Ketu do not become combust. The Sun is the source of combustion. Rahu and Ketu are mathematical shadow points and do not have combustion in the classical sense.

A planet is combust when it is within the specified number of degrees on either side of the Sun's position. For example, if the Sun is at 20° Aries, Mars is combust if placed anywhere between 3° Aries and 7° Taurus (within 17° on either side). The planet is most impacted at the center of this range — the closer to the Sun's exact degree, the deeper the combustion.

How Combustion Affects a Planet's Significations

> Combustion does not destroy a planet — it subordinates it. The planet's natural drive and purpose are absorbed into the Sun's themes of ego, authority, and outward performance. This can make the planet's gifts harder to access, especially for the quiet, personal, or inward aspects of life that the combust planet governs.

When a planet is combust, the following general effects apply:

Loss of independent expression: The planet's energy merges with the Sun's. This means the planet's significations — career themes, relationships, health factors, spiritual qualities — become filtered through a solar lens of authority, ambition, and public performance.

Weakening of the planet's body significators: Each planet represents certain organs and body systems. Combustion weakens those body areas. A combust Moon affects mental health and fluids; a combust Jupiter affects liver and fat metabolism; a combust Saturn affects bones and nerve function.

Reduced ability to protect its owned houses: A combust planet cannot fully guard the houses it rules. For example, if Venus is combust for a Taurus Lagna native (Venus rules the 1st and 6th houses), matters of health, appearance, and relationship quality may be compromised.

Struggle during dasha periods: The mahadasha and antardasha of a combust planet often bring the challenges of that planet's weakened state into clear focus. Progress is slower, results come with more effort, and the themes of that planet's houses require more conscious attention.

Partial compensation through Sun's placement: If the Sun is strong (exalted, in its own sign, or well-placed in a kendra or trikona), the combust planet partially benefits from its association. A well-placed Sun can partially lift the combust planet's results even while absorbing its energy.

Effects of Each Combust Planet

> The specific effects of combustion vary based on which planet is involved. Moon's combustion is among the most felt because the Moon governs the mind — when it is combust, mental and emotional life becomes the primary arena of struggle. Saturn's combustion, by contrast, may be less immediately obvious but creates long-term structural challenges that only become clear over years.

Combust Moon: The Moon governs the mind, emotions, mother, and nurturing instincts. When combust, emotional sensitivity is heightened but poorly regulated. The native may experience mood instability, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, or an overly ego-driven emotional life where personal feelings are constantly judged by solar themes of performance and approval. The relationship with the mother may be complicated. Mental health requires conscious attention. The Moon needs distance from the Sun to reflect light — combustion prevents this reflection, creating emotional opacity.

Combust Mars: Mars governs energy, courage, ambition, brothers, and physical strength. Combust Mars can produce hot-headed behavior, impulsive decisions, and difficulty channeling aggression productively. The native may suppress anger (because the Sun absorbs it) and then experience sudden explosions of temper. Physical energy may be erratic — bursts of force followed by exhaustion. In male charts, relationships with brothers or male peers can be strained.

Combust Mercury: Mercury governs intellect, communication, trade, and skill. Combust Mercury is one of the most common planetary conditions since Mercury is always close to the Sun. When combust (especially in the direct phase, with a wider 14° orb), thinking becomes heavily influenced by ego and self-justification. The native may struggle to see objective information clearly, mistake personal narrative for fact, or have difficulty in structured learning environments. Retrograde combust Mercury (within 12°) can also show revisiting old communication patterns.

Combust Jupiter: Jupiter governs wisdom, dharma, children, wealth, and spiritual inclination. Combust Jupiter often produces overconfidence or rigid belief systems — the Sun's ego absorbs Jupiter's wisdom and makes it declaratory rather than genuinely humble. The native may give advice frequently but struggle to receive it. Financial planning may be impulsive. In female charts, the husband (Jupiter's signification for women) may be overly solar — dominant, ego-driven, or career-absorbed. Spiritual practice may be performative rather than internal.

Combust Venus: Venus governs love, marriage, luxury, beauty, and creativity. Combust Venus is considered one of the more disruptive combustions for relationship matters because Venus loses its softness and receptivity when overwhelmed by the Sun. The native may approach relationships with excessive pride or ego investment. In romantic life, there can be a pattern of attraction to dominant, solar individuals who overshadow the native's own needs. Creative work may exist but may struggle to find recognition. Combust Venus in female charts is traditionally associated with delayed or complicated marriage.

Combust Saturn: Saturn governs discipline, karma, service, longevity, and structure. When combust, Saturn's patience is replaced by restlessness and impulsive action that undermines Saturn's core nature. The native may start projects with solar enthusiasm but lack Saturn's stick-to-it quality to complete them. Legal matters, government dealings, and career discipline may be inconsistent. Health issues related to bones, joints, and the nervous system can emerge over time. The father-Saturn dynamic can also create tension between authority and responsibility.

Combustion in Transit vs. Natal Chart

> Combustion in the natal chart is a permanent feature of the birth chart and shapes lifelong patterns. Combustion during transit is temporary and creates shorter windows of difficulty — typically a few weeks — around the themes of the planet involved. Both matter, but natal combustion has far deeper and more consistent effects on personality and destiny.

When a planet becomes combust during transit, everyone with that planet prominently placed in their natal chart feels the temporary weakening more acutely than others. For example, when Mercury turns combust in transit, people with Mercury prominent in their chart (Mercury-ruled ascendants like Gemini or Virgo, or people in Mercury dasha) experience communication breakdowns more intensely than the average person.

To track your own chart's combustion patterns, you can use the birth chart calculator to identify which natal planets are combust. Then note when those planets enter combustion in transit during the year — those windows require extra care in the domains that planet rules.

Can a Combust Planet Be Strengthened

> Yes, but with nuance. Combust planets can be partially strengthened, though you cannot eliminate natal combustion the way you can reduce a debilitation through chart conditions. Strengthening a combust planet means building its significations consciously through lifestyle, mantra, and remedy — not trying to fight the Sun's dominance, but creating space for the planet's energy to operate alongside it.

Several approaches support combust planets:

Mantra for the combust planet: Regular recitation of the planet's beej mantra or stotra builds its energy field. This is not a quick fix but a sustained practice — typically 40 days or longer. The goal is to keep the planet's energy vibrant even while it is overshadowed.

Strengthen the Sun simultaneously: Since the combust planet's energy is absorbed by the Sun, strengthening the Sun (through Surya namaskar, Sun mantras, or dietary choices) improves the overall quality of the Sun's expression and indirectly lifts the quality of the combust planet's output.

Avoid weakening the planet further: Do not wear gemstones for a combust planet without guidance. A gemstone amplifies a planet's energy, and in a combust state, it can amplify the combust planet's struggles rather than helping. Consult a qualified astrologer before using gemstones for any combust planet.

Behavioral remedies: If Venus is combust, practice humility in relationships and avoid ego-driven choices in love. If Jupiter is combust, seek guidance from genuine teachers and avoid overconfidence in decisions about wealth or family. Behavioral alignment with the planet's healthy archetype reduces the distortion that combustion creates.
