Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh: The auspicious dates below apply across India (IST). In Kanpur, Rahu Kaal begins approximately 15 minutes later than the standard IST times shown, due to Kanpur's longitude (North India). Use these dates and adjust the muhurat window with your local pandit's confirmation.
The Vivah Muhurat is the exact time window in which the Saptapadi (seven steps around the sacred fire) and Mangalsutra ceremony must begin. A well-chosen muhurat ensures the couple starts married life under the most harmonious planetary configuration, protecting health, prosperity, and longevity of the union.

Marriage Muhurat — Month by Month 2026
Marriage season opens after Makar Sankranti (January 14). Most of January falls in Krishna Paksha (waning moon), which limits auspicious dates to a handful.
February is the best marriage month of early 2026. The full Shukla Paksha (waxing moon fortnight) is available from February 1, giving excellent tithi and nakshatra combinations.
March 1–13 has good marriage muhurats. Kharmas begins around March 14–15 when the Sun enters Pisces — book only dates before this.
April splits into two blocks. Before April 13: Kharmas (blocked). From April 13 (Mesha Sankranti): season resumes. Akshaya Tritiya (late April) is inherently auspicious — no muhurat calculation required.
May is the most popular marriage month of 2026. The entire month is available with multiple excellent weekday–tithi combinations and ideal North Indian pre-monsoon weather.
June is the last full marriage month before Chaturmas. Book venues early — demand is high as families race to beat the July restriction.
Only the first few days of July are available. Devshayani Ekadashi (around July 6) begins Chaturmas — after which all marriage ceremonies are suspended.
Chaturmas — Lord Vishnu in yogic sleep. No marriage muhurats August through October.
Chaturmas continues through September.
Chaturmas continues through October. Season resumes November 2.
Devuthani Ekadashi (around November 2) ends Chaturmas — the day Lord Vishnu wakes from yogic sleep. This day itself is considered the most auspicious single day of the year to begin a wedding ceremony.
December 1–14 has marriage muhurats. Kharmas begins around December 15–16 when the Sun enters Sagittarius — this is the last marriage window of 2026.
Benefits of Performing Marriage Muhurat in an Auspicious Muhurat
Why timing matters — from Grihyasutras and Muhurta Chintamani
Lifelong Marital Harmony
Starting the Saptapadi under an auspicious nakshatra creates a protective energy field the couple carries through shared Dasha cycles — especially during Sade Sati and Rahu-Ketu transits.
Dosha Neutralisation
The right muhurat mitigates Mangal Dosha, Kaal Sarpa Dosha, and residual Nadi Dosha effects that Kundali Milan alone cannot fully resolve — the timing creates an independent protective buffer.
Aligned Dasha Start
A muhurat matched to both birth charts ensures the first year of marriage begins in a constructive Dasha for both partners — not during a Mahadasha transition or Antardasha conflict.
Generational Prosperity
Marriages under Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, or Revati nakshatra carry a Lakshmi Yoga that Muhurta Chintamani says multiplies family wealth and goodwill across generations.
Progeny & Lineage Blessing
Panchami and Saptami tithis strengthen the 5th house of progeny. Weddings on these tithis are traditionally considered auspicious for healthy, long-lived children.
Social Honour & Reputation
Thursday muhurats under Jupiter's influence ensure the couple's social standing grows steadily — each shared milestone post-wedding aligns with an expansive planetary period.
How Marriage Muhurat Is Calculated
Based on Jyotish Vedanga — the classical system of auspicious timing
Confirm the date is not in Kharmas or Chaturmas
Choose a weekday from Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday
Verify the tithi (lunar day) is auspicious: 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, or 13th
Check the nakshatra (lunar mansion): Rohini, Hasta, Anuradha, Uttara Phalguni preferred
Identify that day's Rahu Kaal and schedule the ceremony outside it
Select the Lagna (rising ascendant) — 2nd, 7th, 11th house must be strong at ceremony start
Cross-check with both partners' birth charts (Kundali Milan)
Birth Chart Analysis
The calculation above uses general rules. Your Janam Patrika adds the personal layer.
Dharmasindhu explicitly states muhurat selection must cross-check the individual's lagna, dasha lord, and Janma Nakshatra. A universally auspicious date can still be personally inauspicious — don't skip this step.

“A marriage muhurat is not just about the calendar date — it must be confirmed against your personal lagna and dasha lord. Muhurta Chintamani, the classical text on auspicious timing, specifies that even a universally auspicious muhurat becomes malefic if the birth chart's ascendant lord is poorly placed on that day. In 15 years of practice, I have seen excellent general muhurats produce poor outcomes for specific individuals who skipped this personalisation step.”

People Also Ask
Frequently asked questions about marriage muhurat
Why is marriage muhurat important in Hindu tradition?
The muhurat is the precise auspicious time window when the planetary configuration most favours a lifelong union. The Saptapadi and Mangalsutra ceremony must start within this window. A strong muhurat protects the couple from early marital challenges — especially malefic planetary transits that each partner will face individually.
Can marriage happen during Chaturmas (July to November 2026)?
In North Indian tradition, marriage is strictly avoided during Chaturmas — the four months when Lord Vishnu is in yogic sleep, from Devshayani Ekadashi (around July 6) to Devuthani Ekadashi (around November 2). South Indian and some regional traditions are less strict. In 2026, the marriage season resumes immediately after November 2.
What is Kharmas and why does it block weddings?
Kharmas is the period when the Sun transits Sagittarius (mid-December to mid-January) or Pisces (mid-March to mid-April). The Sun's diminished strength in these signs weakens the auspiciousness of any new beginning. All major samskaras — marriage, griha pravesh, business launch — are traditionally avoided.
Is Akshaya Tritiya always auspicious for marriage?
Yes — Akshaya Tritiya (Shukla Tritiya of Vaishakha, late April) is inherently auspicious and requires no separate muhurat calculation. Marriage on this day is considered blessed with lasting prosperity regardless of tithi, nakshatra, or weekday.
What is the role of Kundali Milan in muhurat selection?
Kundali Milan (horoscope matching) and muhurat selection are separate steps. Milan checks long-term compatibility through Ashtakoot analysis. Once the couple is matched, the jyotishi selects a muhurat that is also compatible with both birth charts — avoiding the Janma Nakshatra day, Mrityubhaga tithi, or a difficult Dasha change for either partner.
