History and Origin of Hare Krishna Mahamantra
The Hare Krishna Mahamantra's Vedic origin is the Kali Santarana Upanishad (Krishna Yajurveda tradition). The text records the sage Narada asking Brahma which practice is supreme for Kali Yuga (the current age of spiritual decline). Brahma replies: "The 16-name, 32-syllable Hare Krishna Mahamantra is the only means of deliverance in Kali Yuga."
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1534 CE, Bengal) popularized this mantra through sankirtan (congregational chanting) throughout India. His ecstatic kirtans in Navadvipa and Jagannath Puri drew enormous crowds and are documented in the Chaitanya Charitamrita as historically verified events. Srila Prabhupada (A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami) brought the mantra globally through ISKCON in the 1960s–70s; it is now chanted in every country.

How to Recite Hare Krishna Mahamantra — Correct Practice
The standard method is japa (personal silent chanting) on 108 tulsi wood beads. Hold the mala in the right hand, begin from the bead next to the central Meru bead, and chant the full 16-word mantra once per bead for 108 beads = 1 round. Do not cross the Meru bead — reverse direction. The ISKCON initiation standard is 16 rounds daily (~2 hours). For non-initiated practitioners, 1 round (108 repetitions, approximately 8 minutes) daily is an effective starting practice.
The Gaudiya tradition teaches that the point of japa is to hear Krishna's name — not just say it. Chant each of the 16 words distinctly, without slurring, and listen as you chant.
