The Ketu Beej Mantra is the seed-sound invocation of Ketu — the shadowy south lunar node and the planet of moksha, past-life karma, spiritual liberation, and psychic sensitivity in Vedic astrology — used to reduce Ketu's isolating and destabilising effects, deepen spiritual practice, and channel Ketu's profound energy toward liberation and inner wisdom.

The Ketu Beej Mantra

Sanskrit: ॐ स्त्रां स्त्रीं स्त्रौं सः केतवे नमः

IAST Transliteration: Om Strām Strīm Straum Saḥ Ketavē Namaḥ

Phonetic (English): Om Straam Streem Straum Sah Ketave Namah

Short Beej Form: ॐ स्त्रीं केतवे नमः (Om Streem Ketave Namah)

Meaning of the Ketu Beej Mantra

Component | Meaning

  1. Om | Primordial sound — the vibration from which all creation emerges
  2. Strām Strīm Straum | The three beej syllables of Ketu — encoding the south node's dissolving, liberating, past-life-processing energy across the three planes
  3. Saḥ | "He" or "That" — Ketu's presence being invoked
  4. Ketavē | "To Ketu" — the south lunar node, the tail of the celestial serpent Svarbhanu
  5. Namaḥ | "I bow" — complete surrender and invocation

Ketu, the south lunar node, is the complementary opposite of Rahu. Where Rahu grasps and craves, Ketu releases and renounces. Where Rahu amplifies worldly desire, Ketu generates spiritual detachment and withdrawal. Ketu represents what the soul already mastered in past lives — and what it is now releasing in order to evolve. The Ketu Beej Mantra works at this deep level of karmic completion.

Understanding Ketu's Nature

Ketu's Significations:

  • Past-life accumulated wisdom and the skills already mastered
  • Moksha — liberation from the cycle of rebirth
  • Spiritual insight, psychic sensitivity, and occult knowledge
  • Isolation, withdrawal, and sudden separations
  • Losses, reversals, and the dissolution of attachments
  • Health mysteries and unexplained physical conditions
  • Foreign elements, unusual experiences, and that which defies ordinary explanation

Ketu is considered the most spiritual of the nine Vedic planets — and one of the most difficult to navigate in everyday worldly life. Its energy naturally dissolves attachments, which can manifest as unexpected losses, sudden endings, and the collapse of what seemed permanent. The Ketu Beej Mantra helps practitioners consciously work with these releases rather than being overwhelmed by them.

Benefits of Chanting Ketu Beej Mantra

Astrological Benefits:

  • Reduces the destabilising, isolating effects of a malefic Ketu
  • Supports navigation of Ketu Mahadasha (7 years)
  • Mitigates negative effects of Ketu transit over natal planets
  • Reduces the confusion, psychic disturbance, and physical mystery conditions associated with strong Ketu

Spiritual Benefits (Ketu's Primary Domain):

  • Accelerates spiritual growth — Ketu's energy naturally withdraws attachment to the material world
  • Deepens meditation and access to inner silence
  • Opens psychic and intuitive channels — Ketu is the planet of inner knowing
  • Supports moksha sadhana — the practices aimed at liberation
  • Reduces ego identification and the suffering it causes

Mental and Psychological Benefits:

  • Dissolves psychic confusion, strange fears, and unexplained anxieties
  • Reduces the sense of isolation and spiritual disconnection Ketu can produce
  • Grounds the often-unworldly, floating quality of heavy Ketu influence
  • Supports processing and completion of karmic patterns from past lives

Physical Benefits:

  • Ketu governs mysterious, hard-to-diagnose health conditions
  • The mantra supports recovery from conditions that don't respond to ordinary treatment
  • Beneficial for neurological health, psychosomatic conditions, and immune mysteries

Who Should Chant the Ketu Beej Mantra

The Ketu Beej Mantra is particularly recommended for:

  • People currently in Ketu Mahadasha (7 years)
  • Those with Ketu in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house creating significant life disruption
  • Individuals experiencing sudden losses, unexpected endings, or forced separations
  • Spiritual practitioners seeking to deepen their practice and access deeper states
  • Those experiencing psychic disturbances, strange fears, or inexplicable anxiety
  • People with hard-to-diagnose health conditions
  • Anyone who senses deep past-life karmic patterns playing out in their current circumstances

How to Chant Ketu Beej Mantra

Ideal Time: Tuesday evening or during the hour of Ketu — Ketu is traditionally associated with Mars's Tuesday energy. The pre-dawn period (Brahma Muhurta) is also deeply associated with Ketu, which governs the dimension just before and just after ordinary waking consciousness.

Chanting Count:

  • Minimum: 108 times daily (one mala)
  • Full sadhana: 7,000 repetitions over 40 days (Ketu's traditional count, correlating with his 7-year Mahadasha)
  • For Ketu Mahadasha support: 14,000 repetitions over 90 days

Method: 1. Face Northwest (Ketu's direction in Vastu) 2. Sit in Padmasana (lotus pose) or Sukhasana — Ketu benefits most from meditative stillness 3. Use a Cat's Eye (Lehsunia/Vaidurya) mala or Kusha grass mala 4. Alternatively use a 9-mukhi Rudraksha mala 5. Chant with a very soft, inward voice — even mental repetition (manasik japa) is powerful for Ketu, which operates in inner dimensions 6. Keep the eyes closed and attention turned inward throughout the practice

Offerings During Practice:

  • Offer grey or smoke-coloured flowers, sesame seeds, or grey/dark cloth at a Ketu/Navagraha shrine
  • Donate to renunciates, ascetics, and spiritual organisations
  • Feed dogs — dogs are traditionally associated with Ketu's energy

Ketu Beej Mantra During Ketu Mahadasha

Ketu Mahadasha runs for 7 years and is often experienced as a period of withdrawal, spiritual searching, unexpected losses, and fundamental questioning of worldly purpose. Unlike Rahu's 18-year expansion, Ketu's 7-year period tends toward contraction, release, and inward movement.

Practitioners in Ketu Mahadasha report that the period becomes more navigable when they actively lean into Ketu's spiritual orientation rather than resisting its dissolving of worldly attachments:

  • Accept that some things are meant to end during this period
  • Deepen spiritual practice — Ketu rewards genuine sadhana during his Mahadasha
  • Reduce worldly ambition temporarily and invest in inner development
  • The Ketu Beej Mantra, chanted regularly, creates a container for these dissolving energies

What to Do and Avoid

Recommended Practices:

  • Begin sadhana on a Tuesday, during Krishna Paksha (waning fortnight)
  • Wear grey, smoke-grey, or white clothing during practice
  • Engage in meditation, silence, and spiritual reading on the day of chanting
  • Simplify and declutter — Ketu's mantra accelerates a natural movement toward non-attachment

What to Avoid:

  • Avoid excessive materialism, grasping, or worldly ambition on the day of Ketu practice — this contradicts Ketu's energy
  • Do not resist the releases and endings Ketu brings — the mantra helps process them, not prevent them
  • Avoid overstimulation — loud music, excessive social media, frantic activity — on the day of chanting
