Kanakadhara Stotram: Shankaracharya's Wealth Stotra

The Kanakadhara Stotram (also written Kanakadhaara Stotram) is a 22-verse Sanskrit hymn composed by Adi Shankaracharya (788–820 CE) in a single spontaneous act of devotion to Goddess Lakshmi. He composed it while begging for food as a student — a poor woman, having nothing else, gave him a single dried amla (gooseberry) fruit. Shankaracharya was so moved by her poverty and generosity that he composed this Stotram on the spot, praying to Lakshmi to bless her. Lakshmi responded immediately — a shower of golden amla fruits filled the woman's home. The miracle and the Stotram are among the most widely documented events in Shankaracharya's biography.

Kanaka = gold, Dhara = shower/stream — the Stotram is literally "the hymn that causes a shower of gold." It is 22 verses in the Sragdhara metre, a complex Sanskrit metre of 21 syllables per line known for its flowing, wave-like rhythm. The composition style is characteristic of Shankaracharya's spontaneous divine poetry — other examples include the Bhaja Govindam (composed when he saw an old man memorizing grammatical rules) and the Soundarya Lahari (108 verses on the Goddess's beauty).

The Stotram addresses Lakshmi primarily as the consort of Vishnu (Hari) — emphasizing that Lakshmi's grace operates through her relationship with the Supreme Preserver. Verse after verse uses the image of the lotus to describe Lakshmi: she is lotus-eyed (kamala-nayana), lotus-seated (kamala-asana), and her beauty is the reflection of the lotus's pure emergence from muddy water — the archetype of spiritual abundance arising from earthly difficulty.

श्री कनकधारा स्तोत्रम्

अङ्गं हरे: पुलकभूषणमाश्रयन्ती भृङ्गाङ्गनेव मुकुलाभरणं तमालम्। अङ्गीकृतखिलविभूतिरपाङ्गलीला माङ्गल्यदास्तु मम मङ्गलदेवतायाः॥ 1 ॥

मुग्धा मुहुर्विदधती वदने मुरारे: प्रेमत्रपाप्रणिहितानि गतागतानि। माला दृशोर्मधुकरीव महोत्पले या सा मे श्रियं दिशतु सागरसम्भवायाः॥ 2 ॥

आमीलिताक्षमधिगम्य मुदा मुकुन्दम् आनन्दकन्दमनिमेषमनङ्गतन्त्रम्। आकेकरस्थितकनीनिकपक्ष्मनेत्रं भूत्यै भवेन्मम भुजङ्गशयाङ्गनायाः॥ 3 ॥

बाह्वन्तरे मधुजित: श्रितकौस्तुभे या हारावलीव हरिनीलमयी विभाति। कामप्रदा भगवतोऽपि कटाक्षमाला कल्याणमावहतु मे कमलालयायाः॥ 4 ॥

कालाम्बुदालिललितोरसि कैटभारे: धाराधरे स्फुरति या तडिदङ्गनेव। मातु: समस्तजगतां महनीयमूर्ति: भद्राणि मे दिशतु भार्गवनन्दनायाः॥ 5 ॥

प्राप्तं पदं प्रथमत: खलु यत्प्रभावान्- -माङ्गल्यभाजि मधुमाथिनि मन्मथेन। मय्यापतेत्तदिह मन्थरमीक्षणार्धं मन्दालसं च मकरालयकन्यकायाः॥ 6 ॥

विश्वामरेन्द्रपदविभ्रमदानदक्ष- -मानन्दहेतुरधिकं मुरविद्विषोऽपि। ईषन्निषीदतु मयि क्षणमीक्षणार्धं इन्दीवरोदरसहोदरमिन्दिरायाः॥ 7 ॥

इष्टा विशिष्टमतयोऽपि यया दयार्द्र- -दृष्ट्या त्रिविष्टपपदं सुलभं लभन्ते। दृष्टि: प्रहृष्टकमलोदरदीप्तिरिष्टां पुष्टिं कृषीष्ट मम पुष्करविष्टरायाः॥ 8 ॥

दद्याद्दयानुपवनो द्रविणाम्बुधाराम् अस्मिन्नकिञ्चनविहङ्गशिशौ विषण्णे। दुष्कर्मघर्ममपनीय चिराय दूरं नारायणप्रणयिनीनयनाम्बुवाहः॥ 9 ॥

इष्टा प्रदेशपरिपालनतत्पराणां आशापरांशुमतिमत्स्यसमा भवन्तः। नो चेत् दयार्द्रनयना: कथमन्यथायं वर्त्तेत राजसि विभो: करुणाम्बुवाहः॥ 10 ॥

Verse 1: "She who clings to Hari's body like a bee clinging to a dark-blue tamala flower adorned with buds — may that auspicious Goddess, who has assumed the glory of all creation through her glances, bestow all auspiciousness on me."

This opening verse uses the bee-and-flower metaphor to describe Lakshmi's relationship with Vishnu (Hari): she is the beauty-consciousness that clings to the divine presence as naturally and irresistibly as a bee clings to the sweetest flower. The devotee who recites this verse is placing themselves in the position of asking to receive what flows naturally from that divine relationship.

Verse 2: "Like a bee intoxicated at a great blue lotus, her eyes move back and forth on Murari's (Vishnu's) face with love-tinged shyness — may that Lakshmi, born from the ocean, grant me prosperity."

The ocean-born (sagar-sambhava) epithet connects the Stotram to the Samudra Manthan origin of Lakshmi. Her eyes' "back-and-forth" movement is vilasa (divine play) — the most intimate quality of the divine feminine, described in the aesthetic tradition as producing absolute beauty.

Verse 9 (the most direct petition): "May the cloud of Narayana's beloved's compassionate eyes shower streams of wealth like rain on this helpless little bird caught in the storm of evil karma." This is the verse that most directly mirrors Shankaracharya's original petition for the poor woman — using the metaphor of the helpless fledgling in a storm to describe genuine financial destitution.

The Kanakadhara Stotram is specifically for financial emergency and serious poverty situations — not for general prosperity cultivation (the Lakshmi Chalisa or Mahalakshmi Mantras serve that purpose). Recite when: facing acute financial crisis, after job loss, after major financial loss or business failure, or when any other Lakshmi practice has not produced results after sustained effort.

The specific miracle-tradition practice: recite the complete 22 verses once daily for 21 consecutive days, on an empty stomach before sunrise, facing east, with a ghee lamp and amla fruit offering (to mirror the original poor woman's offering). This practice sequence connects the practitioner directly to the original event that generated the Stotram.

The Mahalakshmi Ashtakam (8 verses, from the Padma Purana) is a formal Puja hymn for regular Lakshmi worship — balanced and devotional in tone. The Kanakadhara Stotram (22 verses, by Shankaracharya) is a crisis-prayer with urgency in its Sanskrit — every verse presses toward the single point of seeking Lakshmi's immediate grace for a person in genuine need.
