The Aarti opens by naming Ganesha's divine parents — establishing his authority not by describing his qualities first but by stating his lineage. In Vedic culture, identity begins with parentage. Ganesha is the son of the two supreme deities of the Trika Shaiva tradition — this parentage alone establishes his primacy above all other deities in the devotional sequence.

Verse 2: Ekadant Dayavant, Char Bhuja Dhari — "One-tusked and compassionate, bearer of four arms; his forehead adorned with sindoor, riding the mouse." This verse covers the three most iconographically distinctive features of Ganesha. Ekadant (one tusk) is the result of Ganesha breaking his own tusk to use as a writing instrument when he was scribing the Mahabharata for Vyasa — a story from the Brahma Vaivarta Purana that establishes Ganesha's self-sacrifice for the preservation of knowledge. The sindoor on his forehead is associated with Mars energy — activating the tejas (radiance) of obstacles being burned away.

Verse 3: Pan Chathe Phal Chathe, Ladduan Ka Bhog Lage — "Betel leaves are offered, fruits are offered; the offering of modak (laddoo) is made; saints serve him." This verse names the specific offerings that please Ganesha — establishing the Puja material requirements within the Aarti itself. Laddoo (modak) is specifically mentioned in the Ganesh Purana as Ganesha's most beloved offering because it represents the sweetness of liberation that awaits at the successful completion of all undertakings.

Verse 4: Andhan Ko Aangh Det, Kodhin Ko Kaya, Banjhan Ko Putra Det, Nirdhan Ko Maya — "He gives sight to the blind, body to the diseased, sons to the barren, wealth to the poor." This verse is theologically the most comprehensive — it states Ganesha's four primary miracle-domains: healing vision (literally and metaphorically — clarity of discernment), healing physical illness, resolving fertility challenges, and removing poverty. Each miracle corresponds to a specific life-area that Ganesha's obstacle-removing function addresses most directly.

Verse 5: Suri Shyam Sharan Aaye, Safal Kije Seva — "Surdas and Shyamdas have taken your refuge — make our service fruitful." This closing verse uses the names of the poet-devotees who have composed and transmitted the Aarti — a bhakta attestation to the Aarti's efficacy based on the testimony of genuine saints.

The correct Ganesh Aarti procedure: light a 5-wick ghee lamp, hold the thali (offering plate) at chest height, begin circling the lamp clockwise before Ganesha's image while singing, ring the bell with the free hand, complete three circles per verse, and at the close bring the lamp close to Ganesha's feet, abdomen, and face in succession. Finally, pass the warmth of the lamp over your own face and head to receive Ganesha's tejas.

The offering during the Aarti: modak or laddoo placed before the image, fresh durva grass (three-bladed), red flowers (hibiscus or red rose), and the ghee lamp. The panchopachara (five-offering) Puja minimum for Ganesh Aarti is: lamp, incense, flower, food (modak), and water — representing all five elements (fire, air, earth, earth-product, and water).

The Ganesh Aarti holds a unique position in Hindu devotional practice: it is always performed first, before any other deity's Aarti. In multi-deity Puja sequences (Navgraha Puja, Satyanarayan Puja, Durga Puja), the Ganesh Aarti precedes all others. This first-position reflects Ganesha's Prathamapujya status (most worthy of first worship) granted by Shiva's proclamation in the Shiva Purana.

The practical implication: for daily home Puja, even if you are primarily a Hanuman or Durga or Vishnu devotee, the Ganesh Aarti is the standard opening. Skipping it is considered inauspicious — not as a superstition, but as an acknowledgment that without clearing obstacles first, all subsequent devotional effort may face unnecessary resistance.

The fourth verse of the Aarti itself names the specific benefits: healing of sight problems, recovery from serious illness, resolving infertility, and removal of poverty. Beyond these, regular Ganesh Aarti practice produces: clarity of discernment (seeing what needs to be done without confusion), removal of the resistance that delays right action, and the auspiciousness (mangalya) that makes other activities — study, work, relationships — flow more easily.

For astrological purposes: Ganesh Aarti performed on Wednesdays and during Ketu Mahadasha progressively dissolves the obstacles and confusion that Ketu creates. Unlike Saturn's obstacles (which require sustained 7.5-year work), Ketu's obstacles tend to dissolve suddenly — which is why Ganesha's obstacle-removing energy resonates so directly with Ketu.
