Varalakshmi Vratam 2026 — Key Details
Varalakshmi Vratam falls on the Friday before Sravana Purnima — 8 Aug 2025, 7 Aug 2026. Women of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka worship Goddess Varalakshmi (the boon-giving form of Lakshmi) and tie sacred kalava thread on a decorated kalash. It is considered the most important Lakshmi festival of South India.
Varalakshmi Vratam 2026 — Significance & Celebration
Varalakshmi Vratam (Vara = boon, Lakshmi = goddess of prosperity) is the premier Lakshmi observance of South India, described in the Skanda Purana as more meritorious than worshipping the Ashtalakshmis (eight forms of Lakshmi) separately. The vrat is always observed on Friday — Lakshmi's day — closest to but before Sravana Purnima (the full moon of Sravana month). Married women observe it primarily for the health and prosperity of their families; unmarried women observe it for a good husband. The kalash (pot) wrapped in a saree and decorated with gold jewellery serves as the primary image of the goddess — a uniquely South Indian tradition that reflects the Agamic (temple-ritual) roots of the worship.
The Skanda Purana narrates the story of Charumati, a devoted woman of Kundina city. Goddess Mahalakshmi appeared to her in a dream and instructed her to perform the Varalakshmi Vrat — preparing a kalash, decorating it with jewels, offering flowers, sweets, and fruit, and tying the sacred thread on her wrist. Charumati performed the vrat exactly as instructed. As a result, her family was blessed with prosperity, her husband was healed of illness, and her household overflowed with abundance. Word spread and all the women of Kundina observed the vrat together the following year. The story establishes the pattern for the observance: a Friday, Sravana month, a decorated kalash, and sincere devotion.
How to Celebrate Varalakshmi Vratam in 2026
- 1Wake before sunrise, take a ritual bath, and dress in the finest saree — traditionally yellow or red
- 2Prepare the kalash: fill a brass pot with water, cover with mango leaves and a coconut, drape it in a saree, and adorn it with gold jewellery and kumkum
- 3Draw a Lakshmi yantra (lotus-petal design) on a wooden plank and place the kalash on it
- 4Offer 16 items (Shodashopachara Puja): flowers, sandal paste, turmeric, kumkum, bangles, saree, fruits, sweets, and lamps
- 5Recite the Varalakshmi Vrat Katha (story of Charumati from Skanda Purana)
- 6Tie the sacred yellow or red kalava thread (with Varalakshmi yantra tied in it) on the right wrist — to be worn for a year
- 7Distribute prasadam of vada, payasam, and fruits to all women present; invite neighbors for collective puja

Vedic Astrology & Varalakshmi Vratam
Varalakshmi Vratam falls on a Friday in Sravana month — a powerful double alignment of Venus (Friday = Shukravara, ruled by Venus/Shukra) and the Moon (Sravana nakshatra is ruled by Moon). Goddess Lakshmi is associated with Venus in Vedic astrology. Performing this vrat is a direct Venus remedy: those with Venus debilitation (Virgo), Venus in weak houses, or Venus-related challenges in marriage, finances, or creativity receive maximum benefit. The Sravana month amplifies the vrat's power because it falls within the monsoon season — a time of natural abundance and earth-energy renewal.
