Quick Answer

Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravana Purnima — 9 Aug 2025, 28 Aug 2026. Sisters tie a rakhi (thread) on their brother's right wrist as a symbol of protection and love. The muhurat window avoids Bhadra (an inauspicious period) and typically runs from early afternoon to late evening.

Raksha Bandhan 2027 — Significance & Celebration

Raksha means protection; Bandhan means bond. On this full moon day, a sacred thread is tied by a sister on her brother's wrist — symbolising his vow to protect her and her prayer for his long life. The festival transcends the biological sibling bond: priests tie rakhi on devotees, disciples on teachers, and communities on leaders. Historically, queens sent rakhis to foreign kings requesting protection. The Puranas record Indra's wife Shachi tying a thread on his wrist before the battle with Vritra — which he won. The same thread was used by Vishnu when he was bound by King Bali, freed only when Bali's Guru Shukracharya pointed out that the dwarf Brahmin asking for 3 steps of land was Vishnu in disguise.

During the Mahabharata, Draupadi tore a strip from her sari and tied it around Krishna's bleeding finger when he cut it on the Sudarshana Chakra (his divine discus). Krishna, moved by her spontaneous gesture of care, promised to repay her in kind. Years later, when Dushasana tried to disrobe Draupadi in the Kaurava court, Krishna provided an unending stream of cloth to protect her — fulfilling his promise. This story is one of the mythological foundations of Raksha Bandhan. The protective bond between Krishna and Draupadi — not siblings by blood, but siblings in spirit — is cited as proof that the festival celebrates any protective relationship of love and care.

How to Celebrate Raksha Bandhan in 2027

  1. 1Sisters prepare a puja thali with rakhi, kumkum, rice (akshata), diya, and sweets
  2. 2Perform aarti of the brother; apply tilak on forehead
  3. 3Tie the rakhi on the right wrist of the brother while chanting: "Yena baddho Baali Raja, daanaveendra Mahaabalah..." (the Vedic raksha mantra)
  4. 4Brothers give gifts (money, jewelry, or a promise of protection) after the rakhi is tied
  5. 5Avoid tying rakhi during Bhadra period — the muhurat specifies when Bhadra ends

Vedic Astrology & Raksha Bandhan

Shravana Purnima is the full moon of Shravana month — when the Moon is at full strength in its own sign (Cancer) or exalted sign (Taurus). This amplifies emotional bonds, family ties, and protective instincts. Shravana nakshatra, which rules this period, is associated with listening, learning, and Vishnu. Offering prayers to Vishnu or the sea on this day (Nariyal Purnima) is especially auspicious for those with Moon or Cancer prominent in their chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Raksha Bandhan 2026 is on Friday, 28 August — Shravana Purnima. The auspicious rakhi-tying window avoids the Bhadra period; exact city-wise timings are published closer to the date. The date sits later than usual because 2026 has an extra lunar month (Adhika Jyeshtha).

Bhadra is an inauspicious half of the Vishti Karana that falls in the first part of Purnima. Tying rakhi during Bhadra is considered inauspicious by classical texts. Most years, the Bhadra ends by mid-morning or early afternoon, after which the main window opens.

"Yena baddho Baali Raja, daanaveendra Mahaabalah, tena tvaam api badhnaami, raksha maa chala maa chala" — "With the same thread by which the mighty king Bali was bound, I bind you. May this protect you; be firm, do not waver."
