Raksha Bandhan 2027 โ Key Details
Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravana Purnima โ 17 Aug 2025, 7 Aug 2026. Sisters tie a rakhi (thread) on their brother's right wrist as a symbol of protection and love. The muhurat window avoids Bhadra (an inauspicious period) and typically runs from early afternoon to late evening.
Raksha Bandhan 2027 โ Significance & Celebration
Raksha means protection; Bandhan means bond. On this full moon day, a sacred thread is tied by a sister on her brother's wrist โ symbolising his vow to protect her and her prayer for his long life. The festival transcends the biological sibling bond: priests tie rakhi on devotees, disciples on teachers, and communities on leaders. Historically, queens sent rakhis to foreign kings requesting protection. The Puranas record Indra's wife Shachi tying a thread on his wrist before the battle with Vritra โ which he won. The same thread was used by Vishnu when he was bound by King Bali, freed only when Bali's Guru Shukracharya pointed out that the dwarf Brahmin asking for 3 steps of land was Vishnu in disguise.
During the Mahabharata, Draupadi tore a strip from her sari and tied it around Krishna's bleeding finger when he cut it on the Sudarshana Chakra (his divine discus). Krishna, moved by her spontaneous gesture of care, promised to repay her in kind. Years later, when Dushasana tried to disrobe Draupadi in the Kaurava court, Krishna provided an unending stream of cloth to protect her โ fulfilling his promise. This story is one of the mythological foundations of Raksha Bandhan. The protective bond between Krishna and Draupadi โ not siblings by blood, but siblings in spirit โ is cited as proof that the festival celebrates any protective relationship of love and care.

Vedic Astrology & Raksha Bandhan
Shravana Purnima is the full moon of Shravana month โ when the Moon is at full strength in its own sign (Cancer) or exalted sign (Taurus). This amplifies emotional bonds, family ties, and protective instincts. Shravana nakshatra, which rules this period, is associated with listening, learning, and Vishnu. Offering prayers to Vishnu or the sea on this day (Nariyal Purnima) is especially auspicious for those with Moon or Cancer prominent in their chart.
