Significance of Karva Chauth
Karva Chauth is observed on the 4th day (Chaturthi) of the Krishna Paksha in Kartik month. The word "Karva" means an earthen pot and "Chauth" means fourth. Married women offer water in a karva pot to the Moon at moonrise as the concluding ritual. The fast is nirjala (waterless) from sunrise to moonrise — typically 8 to 12 hours. The festival is associated with the devotion of Savitri (who brought Satyavan back from Yama) and Veeravati (a princess whose brother tricked her into breaking the fast, leading to her husband's death — only restored when she observed the proper Karva Chauth the following year).
The Story Behind Karva Chauth
Queen Veeravati was a beautiful princess who married a king. On her first Karva Chauth, she was fasting at her parent's home. Unable to bear her hunger, her seven brothers created an illusion of the Moon rising early using a mirror behind a peepal tree. Veeravati broke her fast and immediately heard that her husband had died. She wept all night until a goddess appeared and told her the truth. Veeravati observed Karva Chauth properly the following year and her husband was restored to life. This story is told in the evening puja as a cautionary tale about the importance of completing the fast properly, and is one of the Karva Chauth kathas (sacred stories).
How to Celebrate Karva Chauth
