Holi carries two parallel layers of meaning — the mythological and the seasonal. The mythological layer is the story of Prahlada and Holika: the victory of bhakti (devotion) over the abuse of power. The seasonal layer is the arrival of Vasant (spring) — Phalgun Purnima marks the end of the coldest part of the year, and the traditional color powders were originally made from tesu (palash / flame-of-the-forest) flowers, whose bloom announces spring and whose natural pigments have cooling and antibacterial properties.

The Bhavishya Purana records the earliest textual reference to Holi as a ritual — describing the fire ceremony and color play as a double-strand ritual that simultaneously destroys what is old (the bonfire = the death of winter and ego) and celebrates what is new (the colors = spring and joy). The Krishna dimension was added in the Braj region (Vrindavan/Mathura), where the Gita Govinda tradition of Radha-Krishna's color play became the dominant cultural frame for Holi across north and west India.

King Hiranyakashipu of the asuras obtained a boon from Brahma making him nearly indestructible — he could not be killed by human, animal, god, demon, or weapon; neither by day nor by night; neither inside nor outside. He ordered his entire kingdom to worship him instead of Vishnu. His son Prahlada, a committed Vishnu devotee from birth, refused.

Hiranyakashipu tried to kill Prahlada in multiple ways — throwing him off a cliff, using elephants, poison, dark magic. All failed. He then enlisted his sister Holika, who possessed a boon that she could enter fire without being burned. She sat in a bonfire with Prahlada on her lap. But the boon had a condition Holika had forgotten: it protected her only when she entered fire alone. She burned. Prahlada — chanting Vishnu's name — emerged unharmed.

The Holika Dahan bonfire re-enacts this event annually. Circling the fire three times while chanting Vishnu's name reaffirms the protection that came to Prahlada. The ash from Holika Dahan applied to the forehead the next morning is believed to carry protective energy.

The complete Holika Dahan sequence for February 18, 2027 (New Delhi muhurat: 23:12–00:10):

1. Prepare the bonfire site before sunset — a pyre of wood, cow dung cakes, and dry grass arranged around a central pole representing Prahlada 2.
