Holika Dahan commemorates the destruction of the demoness Holika and the miraculous survival of the devotee Prahlad. Hiranyakashipu — the demon king who forbade worship of Vishnu — could not understand how his own son Prahlad continued to be protected despite every attempt to kill him. Holika, the demon king's sister, was granted the boon of immunity to fire. She took Prahlad onto her lap and sat in a bonfire — but divine grace protected Prahlad while Holika herself burned.

The ritual bonfire on Holika Dahan night re-enacts this story:

• The bonfire = Holika — negative forces, ego, old patterns, accumulated negativity
• The flame = divine grace — the purifying fire that destroys what is harmful and protects what is pure
• Circumambulating the bonfire = the devotee passing through purifying fire protected by faith

Wheat stalks (holi) are thrown into the fire and partially burned grains are taken home as prasad — the Holika fire grain (holika prasad) that one eats or keeps is said to bring protection through the coming year.
