Ganesh Chaturthi 2027 — Significance & Celebration
Ganesh Chaturthi is the birthday celebration of Ganesha — the elephant-headed god of wisdom, beginnings, and the remover of obstacles. The festival was given its modern public form by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1893 as a socio-political gathering to mobilise Indians against British rule. It grew into one of India's most elaborate public festivals. The 10-day celebration in Pune draws over 5 million visitors. Ganesha is worshipped first in all Hindu ceremonies because he removes obstacles and ensures success. Chaturthi (the 4th day of every month's lunar cycle) is Ganesha's sacred tithi — Vinayaka Chaturthi falls monthly, but Bhadrapada's is the most sacred.
Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste scraped from her body, breathed life into him, and asked him to guard her door while she bathed. Shiva returned and was stopped at the door by a boy he did not recognize. In his anger, Shiva severed the boy's head. Parvati, devastated, revealed that he was her son. Shiva promised to restore him: Vishnu was sent to find the head of the first being sleeping with its head facing north. An elephant was found — its head was brought back, and Ganesha was restored to life with an elephant head. Shiva declared that Ganesha would henceforth be worshipped before all gods at the start of every undertaking.

- 6Organize or attend Ganesh puja and aarti in the neighborhood
- 7On the final day (1.5, 5, or 10 days), carry the idol in procession to the nearest water body for immersion (Visarjan)

Vedic Astrology & Ganesh Chaturthi
Vinayaka Chaturthi falls on the 4th tithi of Shukla Paksha — Ganesha's own tithi. The Moon is in the waxing phase, building energy. In Vedic astrology, Ganesha is associated with Ketu, the planet of moksha and past karma. Worshipping Ganesha reduces the malefic effects of Ketu and clears obstacles in one's career and relationships. Warning: the Bhavishya Purana warns against looking at the Moon on Vinayaka Chaturthi night — this is said to bring false accusation. If one accidentally sees the Moon, recite the Syamantaka gem story from Bhagavata Purana as a remedy.
