Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates Ganesha's birthday — the moment of his creation by Parvati from sandalwood paste (chandan) and her own skin cells, which Shiva then beheaded and replaced with an elephant head. The Shiva Purana narrates that Ganesha was born when Parvati wanted an attendant who would follow only her commands. Shiva, not recognizing the new being, fought and beheaded him. Parvati's grief was so intense that Shiva restored Ganesha with the head of the first living being found sleeping with its head facing north — an elephant.

Ganesha is the first deity because he removes the obstacles that prevent any action from succeeding. The Rigveda opens with an invocation to the "lord of the host" — later identified as Ganesha. Every Hindu ritual begins with Ganesha Puja because his presence ensures the ritual will succeed without obstruction.

The complete puja sequence for August 26, 2026:

1. Wake before sunrise; bath; wear yellow or orange clothes (Ganesha's sacred colors) 2. The Shiva Purana records two primary accounts:

Version 1 (Parvati origin): Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste mixed with the essence of her own body to be her faithful guardian while she bathed. When Shiva returned home and was stopped by this unknown child, a battle ensued and Shiva decapitated Ganesha. Parvati's grief was cosmic — she threatened to destroy the universe. Shiva ordered the gods to bring the head of the first creature found sleeping with its head toward the north (an auspicious direction in Vedic tradition). They found an elephant — and Ganesha was restored with the elephant head.

Version 2 (Saturn's gaze): Ganesha was born perfect, but Saturn (Shani), present at his birth, was asked to look at the child. Saturn had the curse of burning whatever he gazed upon. Ganesha's head was burned. Vishnu replaced it with an elephant head. This version explains Saturn-Ganesha's connection: Ganesha is specifically propitiated during Saturn's difficult transits.

Modak (modaka in Sanskrit — "ball of bliss") is Ganesha's favorite food — mentioned in the Ganesh Purana as the offering that most pleases him. The Mudgala Purana records that Parvati made 21 modaks for Ganesha at his first worship. The outer shell of rice flour represents the manifest world; the inner filling of coconut and jaggery represents the sweet hidden truth within material reality — a metaphor for Ganesha's role in revealing the path through apparent obstacles.

The number 21 is prescribed because 21 = 3 (trigunas: sattva, rajas, tamas) × 7 (7 planets) — Ganesha as master of all planetary and material forces.

The 10-day Ganeshotsav celebrates Ganesha visiting his devotees on earth — from Chaturthi (August 26) to Anant Chaturdashi (September 4, 2026). Each day represents one of Ganesha's 10 forms (Dashavatar Ganapati in the Mudgala Purana). The festival culminates with Ganesh Visarjan — the idol's immersion in a river, lake, or sea — symbolizing Ganesha's return to Mount Kailash after his earth visit. The procession, kirtan, and community celebrations during Visarjan are the festival's high point.

Ganesha's planet is Mercury (Budha) in Jyotish. Ganesh Chaturthi 2026's Mercury-ruled Wednesday creates a Ganesha-Mercury double activation — the most potent Chaturthi for beginning new intellectual, business, or communication projects.
