It marks Krishna's destruction of the demon Narakasura at dawn. The tradition of an early morning oil bath (Abhyanga Snan) before sunrise on Choti Diwali morning symbolically washes away the accumulated impurities — Narakasura's destruction represents the cleansing of the year's moral and spiritual debris.
