Basanti Puja is the original spring worship of Goddess Durga, held during Chaitra Navratri — 5–6 Apr 2025, 25–26 Mar 2026. Observed primarily in Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, it precedes the more popular autumn Durga Puja by six months. The main puja falls on Chaitra Shukla Ashtami and Navami.

Significance of Basanti Puja
Basanti Puja is the older, classical form of Durga Puja — performed in the spring season (Basant = spring) during Chaitra Navratri, as prescribed in the original Devi Mahatmyam and Devi Bhagavata Purana. The Devi Bhagavata narrates that the gods worshipped Durga in spring (Chaitra) for protection and prosperity — this is the "natural" season of Durga worship. The autumn Durga Puja (Shardiya) became popular through Rama's Akalbodhan — his urgent, "unseasonal" invocation of Durga before the Lanka battle in Ashwin month. Over centuries, the autumn festival grew into the grand public celebration, while Basanti Puja retained its traditional, intimate character — celebrated with elaborate clay idols in many households and temples of Bengal, often with the same rituals as Durga Puja but in quieter, more devotional surroundings.
The Story Behind Basanti Puja
Devi Bhagavata Purana narrates that the gods, plagued by the demon Durgama who stole the Vedas, prayed to the goddess in the spring month of Chaitra. She appeared as Shatakshi (hundred-eyed) and Shakambhari (she who nourishes), restored the Vedas, and slew the demon. The spring puja is thus a direct re-enactment of this original divine intervention. In many Bengali homes, Basanti Puja is a family heirloom tradition — families that have worshipped the goddess in spring for generations continue to do so, maintaining the older liturgy unchanged. The puja ends with Sandhi Puja at the junction of Ashtami and Navami — the most sacred moment — and Dashami (10th day) immersion of the idol.
How to Celebrate Basanti Puja
- 1Perform Bodhana (invocation of the goddess) on Saptami evening — invite Durga into the clay image or kalash
- 2On Maha Ashtami morning, perform Kumari Puja — worship a young girl as the living form of the goddess
- 3Observe Sandhi Puja at the precise junction of Ashtami and Navami tithis — 108 lamps are lit simultaneously
- 4Offer red hibiscus, bel leaves, dhup (incense), and naivedya (food) at each of the 10 hands of the Durga idol
- 5Read or listen to Devi Mahatmyam (Chandi Path) — 700 verses across three sections
- 6On Navami, perform Homa (fire ritual) before the puja concludes
- 7On Dashami, immerse the idol in a river or tank with the cry of "Asche bochor abar hobe" (she will come again next year)

Basanti Puja falls during Chaitra Navratri when the Sun has just entered Aries (its exaltation sign) after the spring equinox. This is the most powerful solar position of the year — symbolising the renewal of life and the victory of light. Worshipping the goddess during this period draws on the combined strength of solar and lunar energy (waxing moon). In Vedic astrology, Chaitra Shukla is considered the most auspicious beginning-point of the year for new ventures, partnerships, and devotional commitments.
