Mangal Dosha — also called Kuja Dosha, Angaraka Dosha, or Bhom Dosha — is an astrological condition that forms in a birth chart when Mars (Mangal/Kuja) occupies houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12 from the Lagna (Ascendant), the Moon sign, or Venus, depending on the classical source being applied. As of 2026, Mangal Dosha remains the most commonly cited dosha in Indian matrimonial matchmaking, with approximately 40-50% of all birth charts showing some form of Mangal Dosha based on the broader Lagna+Moon+Venus rule.

The word "Mangal" means auspicious in everyday usage, which creates a common misconception — Mars itself is not malefic in all contexts. Mars is the planet of energy, courage, ambition, and passion. The "dosha" (affliction) arises specifically from Mars's placement in sensitive relationship-governing houses, where its aggressive and fiery energy disrupts the harmony required for a stable marriage.

Classical Vedic texts including the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) and commentaries by B.V. Raman in his work "How to Judge a Horoscope" provide the foundational framework for identifying and interpreting Mangal Dosha. The tradition is ancient and codified — but its application requires nuance rather than blanket fear.

Mangal Dosha is present when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from a reference point. The three most common reference points used in classical texts are:

The strictest interpretation (Lagna only) identifies roughly 20-25% of charts as manglik. The most expansive interpretation (any of the three reference points) flags 40-50% of charts. B.V. Raman in "Graha and Bhava Balas" recommends using the Lagna as the primary reference and treating the Moon reference as secondary with reduced intensity.

The 12 zodiac signs each have a different character for Mangal Dosha. When Mars is in the 7th house for a Scorpio Ascendant, it occupies Taurus — a sign ruled by Venus (Mars's enemy). The 7th house placement is considered the most direct and severe because Mars directly occupies the house of marriage itself. The 8th house placement is traditionally viewed as threatening the spouse's longevity — though modern astrologers including K.N. Rao caution against literal interpretations of this, noting that 8th-house Mars more commonly indicates transformation and intensity in marriage rather than the spouse's early death.

The classical effects of Mangal Dosha on marriage are described in the Phaladeepika (Chapter 20) and in B.V. Raman's commentary on the 7th house. The nature of the effect depends on which house Mars occupies and which sign it is in.

General symptoms associated with Mangal Dosha include: delay in marriage (especially when Mars is in the 7th or 8th house), repeated conflicts and heated arguments in the relationship, incompatibility in temperament between spouses, physical separation or long periods of absence, and health challenges for the spouse in the traditional 8th-house interpretation.

Mangal Dosha is cancelled (nullified) when one or more of the following conditions are met in the birth chart. The BPHS and regional texts from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan all provide cancellation lists.

Cancellation Condition 1: Both partners are manglik. When both the bride and groom have Mangal Dosha from the same reference point (Lagna or Moon), the dosha cancels out. The fiery Mars energy of one partner matches and neutralizes that of the other. This is the most commonly cited and widely accepted cancellation rule.

Cancellation Condition 2: Mars is in its own sign. When Mars occupies Aries (Mesha) or Scorpio (Vrishchika) in a dosha-creating house, the planet is in its own territory and its aggression is channeled productively. The BPHS states that a planet in its own sign loses its capacity for harm.

Cancellation Condition 3: Mars is in its exaltation sign. Mars is exalted at 28 degrees of Capricorn (Makara). When Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house is also in Capricorn, the exaltation dignifies the planet and cancels the dosha.

Cancellation Condition 4: Benefic aspect on Mars. When Jupiter, Venus, or the waxing Moon aspects the dosha-creating Mars with a full aspect, the benefic energy transforms Mars's harshness. Jupiter's aspect on Mars is particularly powerful — Jupiter's wisdom tempers Mars's aggression.

Cancellation Condition 5: Mars is conjunct Jupiter or Venus. A conjunction with a strong Jupiter or Venus in the same house absorbs and transforms Mars's disruptive energy. BPHS (Chapter 25) describes this as the benefic "embracing" the malefic and converting its energy.

Cancellation Condition 6: Mars is in Cancer (12th house specifically). When Mars is debilitated in Cancer (its debilitation sign) in the 12th house, some regional texts (particularly from Rajasthan) cancel the 12th-house Mangal Dosha on the grounds that a debilitated planet cannot produce its full negative effects.

Cancellation Condition 7: Leo or Cancer Ascendant. For Cancer (Karka) and Leo (Simha) Ascendants, Mars is a functional benefic because it rules friendly houses. When the planet in the dosha house is a functional benefic for the Ascendant, the BPHS says the dosha is effectively cancelled.

Double Manglik refers to a person who has Mars in a dosha-creating house from two of the three reference points simultaneously — for example, from both the Lagna and the Moon sign, or from both the Lagna and Venus. The colloquial term for this is "Dwi-Mangal."

The severity of a double manglik chart depends entirely on which houses are involved and the strength of cancellation conditions. A person with Mars in the 7th from the Lagna and in the 12th from the Moon has a different marital profile than a person with Mars in the 8th from both the Lagna and Venus.

B.V. Raman in "Marriage, Matching and Compatibility" does not endorse the popular notion that double manglik is twice as dangerous. He notes that the addition of a second reference point intensifies the pattern but that the same cancellation conditions apply — and that a double manglik marrying another double manglik achieves the same neutralization as two standard mangliks marrying each other.

The concept of "triple manglik" (from all three reference points) circulates in popular astrology but has no classical textual basis. K.N. Rao, in his seminars documented in "Astrology, Destiny and the Wheel of Time," explicitly identified this as a modern invention with no Parashari precedent.

Classical remedies for Mangal Dosha are prescribed across several texts, with practical guidance from B.V. Raman and modern practitioners.

Kumbh Vivah (Symbolic Wedding with a Pot): The affected person is first married to a clay pot (kumbh), a peepal tree, or an image of Vishnu. The marriage ritual transfers the dosha to the symbolic object. This is the most traditional remedy and is still widely practiced in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The ritual is performed under the guidance of a learned purohit and typically requires 3 hours on an auspicious day.

Mangal Puja on Tuesdays: Worshipping Lord Ganesha and Mars (Mangal Graha) every Tuesday with red flowers, red sandalwood, and red gram (masoor dal) reduces the malefic effects. Reciting the Mangal Stotra 108 times on Tuesdays is prescribed in the Graha Shanti Puja system.

Red Coral (Moonga) Gemstone: Wearing a natural red coral in gold or copper on the ring finger of the right hand, set during a Mangal Hora on a Tuesday during a waxing Moon, strengthens and channels Mars's energy constructively. The minimum weight recommended by B.V. Raman is 6 ratti (approximately 5.4 carats). Hanuman Puja: Hanuman is the deity associated with Mars in Vedic tradition. Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa every day and visiting a Hanuman temple on Tuesdays and Saturdays is universally recommended as the safest and most accessible Mangal Dosha remedy.

Chanting the Mangal Beej Mantra: "Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah" — recited 108 times daily on Tuesdays for 43 consecutive weeks (the traditional Mars cycle duration).

In Ashtakoota Guna Milan (the 36-point compatibility matching system used in North India), Mangal Dosha is assessed outside the 36-point system as a separate compatibility check. Both charts are examined for Mangal Dosha presence, and ideally both should be manglik or neither should be manglik.

The 7th-house and 8th-house Mars placements receive the highest scrutiny in kundli matching. Astrologers also check the Navamsha (D-9 chart) — the divisional chart dedicated to marriage — for Mars's position there. If Mars is in the 7th house of both the Rashi chart (D-1) and the Navamsha chart (D-9), the dosha is considered most intense.

Mars in the 7th house is in direct opposition to the 1st house (the native's own self). This opposition creates a natural tension dynamic: the native's energy and the marriage energy are on opposite ends of the chart, producing confrontation and power struggles.
