2. How to Read Your Kundli
Reading a kundli follows a structured sequence. Here is the practical approach used in classical Vedic practice:
Step 1 — Identify the Lagna (Ascendant)
The Lagna is the most important single point in a kundli. It determines which sign governs the 1st house — and therefore, which sign governs each of the other 11 houses in sequence. Change the birth time by even 2 hours and the Lagna can shift entirely, reorganising the entire chart. This is why exact birth time matters.
Step 2 — Locate the Moon and Sun
The Moon's sign (Rashi) and Nakshatra tell you about your emotional nature, mental patterns, and instinctive responses. The Sun's sign and house tell you about your core identity and vitality. Many Vedic astrologers read a chart from both the Lagna and the Moon as the ascendant simultaneously.
Step 3 — Trace Each Planet to Its House and Sign
Each planet carries a natural signification — Mars governs energy and siblings; Jupiter governs wisdom and expansion; Saturn governs discipline and delay; and so on. The house a planet occupies shows where its energy expresses; the sign shows how. A planet in its own sign or sign of exaltation is strong. A planet in its sign of debilitation is weakened.
Step 4 — Check Aspects (Drishti)
In Vedic astrology, every planet aspects (casts its influence on) the 7th house from its position. Mars additionally aspects the 4th and 8th houses from itself. Jupiter aspects the 5th and 9th. Saturn aspects the 3rd and 10th. These aspects modify the houses and planets they touch — for better or worse depending on the aspecting planet's condition and natural significations.
Step 5 — Identify Yogas (Planetary Combinations)
Yogas are specific planetary configurations described in classical texts. Raj Yogas (combinations of the lords of the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 10th houses) indicate authority and success. 3. Dashas & Timing — How Kundli Predicts Events

Beyond individual planet placements, a kundli is also read for yogas (auspicious combinations) and doshas (planetary afflictions). Both require careful analysis — not every dosha is as severe as it first appears, and not every yoga fully activates unless the Dasha and transit conditions also support it.
