The 12 Houses in Astrology: Understanding Life Areas

The Twelve Bhavas

The 12 houses (Bhavas) in Vedic astrology represent different life areas. The 1st house represents self, 2nd wealth and family, 3rd siblings and courage, 4th home and mother, 5th children and creativity, 6th enemies and health, 7th partnerships, 8th transformation, 9th fortune and dharma, 10th career, 11th gains, and 12th liberation and losses.

Kendra and Trikona Houses

Kendra houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are angular houses representing the pillars of life. Trikona houses (1, 5, 9) are trines associated with dharma and fortune. Planets in these houses are generally well-placed. The combination of Kendra and Trikona lords creates Raja Yoga.

Dusthana Houses

The 6th, 8th, and 12th houses are called Dusthanas or difficult houses. They relate to challenges, obstacles, and karmic lessons. However, malefic planets can do well in these houses (Viparita Raja Yoga), and their lords, when well-placed, can turn challenges into strengths.
